Chris Woakes is England's 'Mr Dependable' here with some solid line and length. There's no way Kane Williamson is dancing down the track and trying anything extravagant to him.

Woakes's fifth ball strikes the New Zealand captain on the pad but there is an inside edge, before he pinches the strike with a dab into the covers off his final delivery.

We will win at home and get annihilated away until we change the structure of the domestic game. The game makes money so we won't change the structure. Repeat for the next 10 years.

    Chris, Bournemouth.

In isolation I think England will be content with how they have bowled. They have not given away many free runs until that last over.

  4. NZ 40-1published at 21 overs

    Latham 14, Williamson 17

England turn to spin as Moeen Ali is introduced into the attack. Kane Williamson responds by taking a few steps down the pitch and smacking the England all-rounder back over his head for six. Two balls later the Kiwi skipper biffs it flatter straight down the ground for a one-bounce four.

I think that will hit the stumps but I think it will have pitched outside leg stump. There was an element of desperation there from England.

  6. Not outpublished at 04:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2018

The ball pitched outside the line and England lose one of their reviews.

  7. England reviewpublished at 19.3 overs

    Williamson on 11

Chris Woakes digs his second delivery into the pitch but Kane Williamson, like a cat on a hot tin roof, is on his tip toes to gently cut it through the gully region.

His next deilvery is a fuller ball raps Williamson on the pad and England decide to review it.

If Stokes is fit to bowl you might as well let him have a go. There has been a passage of play with not much happening. We haven't seen anyone swing the ball like Boult did.

It looks like after a calamitous morning there is going to be plenty of toil for England.

Time for a bit of liquid refreshment.

  11. NZ 27-1published at 19 overs

    Latham 16, Williamson 8

Kane Williamson does a little jog on the spot to loosen up the limbs. It does the trick as he shuffles across and flicks a shorter ball off his hips from Craig Overton down to square leg to add a couple to his score. A similar delivery a few balls later allows the Black Caps skipper to nudge a single.

You don't often see five consecutive maidens in modern cricket. I don't think Williamson will be bothered about a barren spell. He knows he just has to stay out there.

At least New Zealand are being made to work hard by Overton and Woakes.

  13. NZ 22-1published at 18 overs

    Latham 15, Williamson 5

Kane Williamson scampers a run off Chris Woakes' first ball to end a run of five overs without scoring. Tom Latham, with a green stain on the front of his shirt following a slide to make his ground off the very first ball of the innings, pinches the strike with a single off the Warwickshire man's final ball.

  14. NZ 21-1published at 17 overs

The sun is still shining in Auckland, and England's bowlers are bowling some good lines here and attempting to build up a bit of pressure. Craig Overton sends down England's fifth consecutive maiden. Of course, the Kiwis are not in any kind of rush to get the scoreboard moving.

There is suspicion from the New Zealand batsman and throttling from the England bowlers. The tension is rising and modern batsmen don't like absorbing over after over without scoring any runs.

Unforgivable! Bayliss has no idea how to coach a Test team and if we're playing away can we properly prepare rather than just turning up. 10 defeats in 12 Tests away is dreadful. Well paid people on and off the pitch need to look at themselves. Where do we go from here? Shameful IMO.

England captain Joe Root still on the attack with four men in the cordon. Chris Woakes is on the money, but Kane Williamson has a solid defence. A muted Englandm lbw appeal off Woakes' fifth delivery but the bowler is not interested as he motions that the ball is drifting down leg. Four maidens in a row.

  18. NZ 21-1published at 15 overs

Much more sedate now. Consecutive maidens for Craig Overton as Tom Latham is in a cautious and watchful mode.

Don't blame the conditions. Don't blame the pink ball. There were a lot of mistakes made by England's batsmen.
