You have to look at the lack of preparation from England's batsmen. This is rusty. That's taken nothing away from New Zealand and Trent Boult but Alastair Cook was out lambing a few weeks ago!

Nearly all the batsmen are walking after playing a shot. These are technical errors. It's loose cricket.

It's difficult not to swear at this now.

I'm not sure what Moeen Ali has even done here. A yorker from Southee and he misses it by a distance.

It would have been a full toss if Moeen bothered to play a shot from out of the crease.

Moeen Ali, what on earth are you doing? First ball after drinks he goes for an awful swish off the back foot.

Luckily he gets away with this one but...

So a couple of hours ago I was happy about being able to listen to the cricket at a sensible time, not so much any more. I can only imagine what Geoffrey is saying right now...

England are going to have five or so minutes without losing a wicket - it's drinks.

England have lost SEVEN wickets inside the first hour. Trent Boult has been sensational, swinging the pink ball, but England have had absolutely no answer. They've looked clueless.

They need to double their score to reach their previous lowest total with only Stuart Broad and James Anderson to come.

This was similar to the Joe Root dismissal. It's hit middle stump pretty hard. I think it's been that mixture of a little bit of movement and in between some mediocre bowler in terms of length and line, and poor choice of defensive technique and attacking technique.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13 overs

    Woakes b Boult 5 (Eng 23-7)

This is happening people. This may well be England's lowest Test total.

Trent Boult has five wickets and this may well be the best of the lot. Chris Woakes has absolutely no answer to the big inswinger that clatters into the stumps. He plays all around it.

England are still three short of the record low total by any team in Tests.

So Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali are at the crease for England inside the first hour of a Test match.

Joe Root's side are still well adrift of their record lowest total. Here they are...

Jennifer Moore: OMG, not sure I can keep listening to this.

Henry Ellison: So it turns out England can’t play Test cricket any more...goodnight!

Extraordinary! Jonny Bairstow looking to play a bit more expansively. He is too far away from his body and you lose control. He's just chipped it up and Tim Southee has followed through and taken the catch. What a start to this Test match.

    Bairstow c&b Southee 0 (Eng 18-6)

It's time to start looking for England's record low scores. Jonny Bairstow is on his way. This is now one of those 'where were you England collapses'.

New Zealand can do no wrong. Bairstow drives the ball back at Tim Southee in the air and the bowler clings on brilliantly in his follow through.

New Zealand aren't even celebrating with the same enthusiasm now. England have lost three wickets with the score on 18.

The end of another wicket maiden from Boult. His figures so far - six overs, three maidens, four wickets for seven runs. Sensational.

That is a straight ball folks! It's maybe just gripped slightly and come back in. There's a natural gap between the back lift and it's gone through the gap. Another slight technical error by the English batsmen and Trent Boult has taken advantage. It's not really swung at all.

  15. wicket

    Stokes b Boult 0 (Eng 18-5)

    Wow.

Ben Stokes is the latest to come and go and have no answer to the brilliance of Boult with this pink ball. Boult beats Stokes for pace. The ball comes back in off the seam and smashes into the top of off stump.

    England are in tatters.

Ha! Brilliant, Matt. England don't seem to have any answer here to this pink ball that is swinging around. Jonny Bairstow is at the crease inside 44 minutes of play.

    Stonemam c Watling b Southee 11 (Eng 18-4)

Nope this isn't a nightmare, England fans.

Tim Southee joins in the act by getting another of England's top order caught behind.

It's a wretched few balls from Mark Stoneman. The first ball he plays a loose drive that gets him a couple, then an airy fairy push. He sees out the third ball but the fourth is too good and takes the edge again.

What a very interesting first half-hour, although I have to say I don't think Trent Boult and Tim Southee have actually bowled particularly well!

Boult has bowled a little too short if anything. When he's pitched it up England have looked very tentative. It has not been expansive swing, it hasn't gone round corners. If England's batsmen had got forward more they would have covered those deliveries that they have instead nicked. Tim Southee, meanwhile, has lost his line to the left-handers.

  20. Eng 18-3published at 9 overs

Ben Stokes is booed to the crease by a few in the crowd as strides out at this unfamiliar position at number five.

Crikey. What a leave that is and what a delivery first up. The ball whistles just over the top of off stump. This is outstanding from Boult.

It's also a positive start from Stokes. He takes a couple of strides down to meet the ball in defence, something we haven't seen so far.
