The Daily Mirror's Dean Wilson on England's batting performance: "It was awful. There are no two ways about it. There were contributing factors. It was good bowling from Boult and Southee but there are issues over England's preparation, it has not been good enough.

"The players who have played one-day cricket and are making the switch to Test cricket have not been able to cope with that switch, looking at how Jonny Bairstow got out for instance.

"I spoke to Dawid Malan and he talked about going home briefly after the one-dayers. He played in the two-day game and said he felt so rusty and hadn't played enough cricket to get himself ready for this match."

You're not the only one waking up to quite a surprise, Kevin. We've watched it all and in some way I think we're the lucky ones. We don't get that nasty shock that'll ruin many a morning in the UK.

An absolute shocker of a day for England, one of their worst in Test history.

They were bowled out for 58 - no, that's not a typo - in 20.4 overs on the opening day of the two-match series.

It really was a horror show: England were 27-9 at one stage; there were five ducks in total; and number Craig Overton top-scored with 33 not out, more than three times the next highest score.

Trent Boult was the destroyer-in-chief with 6-32, while Tim Southee was far from at his best in claiming 4-25.

It barely improved with the ball for England, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham steering New Zealand to 88-1 by dinner. The skipper is 59 not out - having taken an astounding catch at gully - and the hosts lead by 30.

It's hard to argue with 'Baz'. Kane Williamson has shown England just how they should have batted on this pitch and how they should bat in Test cricket in general.

Jack Blackburn: Seriously, how did I go to bed waiting to see us play NZ in 2018 and wake up to find us playing WI in 1994? Walsh and Ambrose have retired. These horrors are meant to be over.

Welcome to hot, hazy, dusty Mumbai, where the women's T20 tri-series is under way.

A bright and early start, 10am local time, for hosts India and Australia, with England getting in on the act against the Aussies tomorrow. The teams play each other twice before the final next weekend.

Before this competition, Australia beat India 3-0 in an ODI series. India have started well here, though, ploughing to 95-1 from 13 overs after being asked to bat.

It's been a game that New Zealand have dominated. There were some disturbing England technical deficiencies to a full, swinging ball.

A much more traditional session of Test cricket. New Zealand are in the box seat.

    Lead by 30

England's bowling contingent again talking to the umpires about the state of the ball in the hope of a change. Aussie Bruce Oxenford, however, is not in the slightest bit interested

Kane Williamson works a full ball from Craig Overton off his toes through mid-wicket for four before one of the shots of the day. The New Zealand skipper then leans forward and drives a slightly overpitched ball from Overton straight down the ground, past the despairing dive of Stuart Broad, for four.

A regulation over from Moeen Ali with two runs milked from it. England have one more over before the dinner interval.

Well bowled Overton - he brings Williamson forward rather than back. That is the first time in this innings we've seen him play a false stroke.

50 for Williamsonpublished at 35 overs

    NZ 79-1

A glimmer of a chance for England. Kane Williamson plays at the ball with slightly hard hands and Craig Overton finds the edge. England have two slips in place and a wider fourth slip.

The ball, predictably, races through the vacant slip area for a boundary. A fortuitous way for Williamson to bring up a half-century in what has otherwise been a classy knock.

Can't blame you Nick. It was hide behind-the-sofa stuff earlier for England. Moeen Ali is doing a solid containing job without really asking many questions of New Zealand's batsmen. England desperately need wickets.
