Mark Stoneman could learn a lot from the way Jonny Bairstow has played the short ball. He swayed out of the way particularly well. He had six short balls from Neil Wagner and the only way out you can realistically get out is caught so it's a good approach.

Neil Wagner is trying to make something happen. The field is set with three men out on the leg side and he bowls a bouncer to Bairstow before having a little chirp.

The Yorkshireman plays the ball very well. He drops his hands, arches his back and bends his knees to get down to the ground. I know Wanger isn't quick but that's impressive from a batsman who used to struggle with the short stuff in his career.

Jonny Bairstow looks good, solid and like he has his defensive head on. With not long until then new ball you wonder whether New Zealand should at least look at a bit of spin. There are some foot marks to target.

How much is this fifth day affecting your sleep before a Monday morning back at work? I always find myself waking up five or six times to check the scores during the night on days like this, much to the girlfriend's disgust.

Colin de Grandhomme is coming round the wicket to Ben Stokes, perhaps trying to get some uneven bounce out of the footholes outside the off stump.

Stokes is getting a stride in to negate that threat and looks at ease to De Grandhomme now. The seamer's final delivery bounces twice through to Watling and is clocked at just 75mph.

Got a feeling there's a major Stokes innings about to play out as a apology to his team-mates for his actions.

An interesting news release from Cricket Australia, after the ball-tampering scandal:

"Cricket Australia can confirm that all members of the touring Test squad currently remain in South Africa."Multiple media reports that suggest players have departed South Africa for home ports are inaccurate."At this stage, players will remain in South Africa to assist CA with inquiries. Any outcomes from that process will be communicated in due course."

The TV commentators want to see New Zealand's leg spinner Todd Astle introduced into the attack. I must admit I almost forget he was in this line-up. He hasn't bowled yet. It can't be that after you get to day five before one of your front-line bowlers has a bowl. Six more dots from Wagner to Bairstow come with the bowler dragging his length back a little and starting to try his arm with the short stuff. Bairstow isn't tempted.

    That'll be drinks.

Another over. Another maiden. Is your confidence increasing here? It's almost an hour since Dawid Malan was out.

Kane Williamson applauds his bowlers from gully. He must be pretty pleased with his bowlers' efforts so far. There hasn't been a flurry of wickets but in batting-friendly conditions New Zealand keep on nagging away and have almost completely stopped the scoring. Yet another maiden for New Zealand.

Another maiden from Colin de Grandhomme. England are digging in. Stokes doesn't look too bothered about scoring runs. It seems I typoed on the score a couple of overs ago, stating that England were seven down. Apologies if I gave anyone a heart attack.

    Stokes 16, Bairstow 13

There'a an interesting field for Wagner to Bairstow. The left-armer has two fielders 15 yards or so from the batsman on the off side, waiting for the catch off an up-ish drive. For now Bairstow isn't tempted. He let's the ball go by outside off stump but does break the run of dots with a tuck into the leg side for two.

It's all very relaxed out there. Jonny Bairstow has a smile on his face and is chuckling at something said by the Black Caps fielders.

Don't be lulled into thinking this isn't a test though. De Grandhomme proves it. At times he looks innocuous but then he nips one just past the edge of Stokes off the pitch. That's the first false shot from Stokes in a while. The danger is always there. We've now had four maidens in a row.

There's lot of chatter and clapping of hands from New Zealand's players. Jonny Bairstow has looked relatively comfortable so far.

  17. Eng 164-4published at 60 overs

New Zealand may not have the rapid pace of the Aussies but this New Zealand attack has far more variety than England's. The left-arm right-arm combination of opening bowlers Boult and Southee with their swing, then De Grandhomme's testing medium pace and now Neil Wagner's bustling left-arm pace.

I can imagine Wagner is annoying bowler to face. He's always there or there abouts with his line. Always nagging away. This over is a maiden and does just that.

Kane Williamson has just one slip as Colin de Grandhomme continues to Stokes with his medium fast bowling. Stokes is coming down the pitch even more to him than he is to Southee. It's good to see an England batsman willing to use his feet.

We're going to see Neil Wagner for the first time today now. He ruffled a few feathers last night. Will he do the same today?

    Stokes 16, Bairstow 11

Ben Stokes is well known for his attacking strokes but his forward defensive is a thing of beauty. He looks rock solid now in defending to Tim Southee and is also taking a couple of strides down the pitch to negate any movement. The Kiwi-born all-rounder collects four runs comfortably in the over too. Can he be England's hero?

After taking 16 balls to get off the mark Bairstow is up to 11 from 20 and is not looking afraid to attack. This time he drives Colin de Grandhomme through the covers for a couple after the medium pacer replaces Trent Boult. Bairstow throws his hands at the ball again later in the over but picks out the cover fielder. Be careful, Jonny.
