Trent Boult is a terrific performer. He gets a bit more movement, his rhythm is good, he hurries in at pace and his short balls are decisive. If the Kiwis win this Test he is the man of the match by a distance.

A rare DRS success for Kane Williamson. He comfortably has one of the worst records of current Test captains with just four successful reviews out of 34.

And there's no time for more play before the break. Moeen only had a couple of balls to survive before tea.

Ben Stokes marches off on his own with England's hopes resting on his shoulders. He's batted admirably but England only have Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Stuart Broad and James Anderson to come.

What a mood killer for England.

A good review. The reason Trent Boult hesitated was because he saw the bat on it but his mates thought it might be pad first and they were right to persuade him. Moeen was late on it and it did strike the pad first. New Zealand have had to work hard but they have got their wickets.

    Yep. Moeen's gone.

It was an inswinger from Trent Boult and Moeen inside edged the ball onto the back pad but the problem is he's playing the ball so late that the ball has actually flicked his front pad first.

Once the tiniest flick on hot spot can be seen on the pad the rest is straight forward. The ball would have knocked middle stump out of the ground.

Right on the stroke of tea New Zealand remove Moeen. Trent Boult has nine in the match.

Moeen has smashed the ball but it might have hit the front pad first. I think Moeen is in trouble.

Big moments. Huge appeal for lbw against Moeen. The umpire gives it not out. It looks straight. New Zealand review it. Moeen needs to have got bat on this.

I don't mind Moeen Ali playing like this. He is arguably more secure playing shots because he is more relaxed and less up tight. He is more confident playing his natural game.

  9. Eng 217-5published at 82.2 overs

Moeen Ali is racing along. Another streaky boundary.

It's kinda an edge but goes down again. The third slip is beaten on the second bounce.

You won't be surprised to read Tim Southee shares the new ball with Boult. He starts with four dots but then bowls a shoddy delivery short and wide which Moeen slashes away. I've criticised Moeen but that was there to hit. I don't mind that.

Not too sure about this one though. A little straighter and with the blood racing Moeen wafts again. The ball hits the outer part of the bat but goes down allowing him to collect four rather than offer a chance to the slips.

    Minimum 64 overs

Ben Stokes' application in this innings has been very commendable. He has faced over 80 deliveries now for his 25 runs. Boult looks for the full swinging deliveries that did the damage in the first innings but doesn't quite find the movement or the line.

    Stokes blocks it out.

None of the balls have swung as much as on day one. Trent Boult is a lovely bowler and when he does get it swinging he is really dangerous. I think he would probably close to being in a world XI.

  13. new ball

    Minimum 65 overs left

New Zealand take the new ball straight away. They'll have 15 minutes with it before lunch.

Unsurprisingly Williamson throws the new nut Trent Boult's way. A crucial passage of play coming up.

    Stokes 25, Moeen 16

Boult and Southee are warming up. They resemble two hyenas about to race in for the hunt.

Moeen continues to frustrate. He insists on trying to make contact with everything despite the ball being wide enough to leave. Luckily this one misses the edge as well.

With one over to go until the new ball, Kane Williamson is going to bowl himself.

Nigel Cobbett: It must annoy English batsmen to be playing cricket in NZ when they would rather be doing something else!

Michael Gale: Still time for Aggers to be proven right, England could easily be bowled out here before Astle gets another seven overs in!

As Aggers says, Moeen has lifted the excitement levels but if he gets out pulling in this situation I think he should stay in New Zealand rather than come back to the UK at the end of the series.

He has Astle to deal with now and still insists on attacking. Moeen sweeps for four but then sees the ball narrowly miss his outside edge a couple of balls later. New Zealand were a couple of milimetres away from a sixth wicket there.

The 200 is up by the way, not that it matters.

That was a horrible attempted pull from Moeen Ali. If you are the next man in you are thinking 'Moeen what are you doing?!' but he is going about it in his own way. It's exciting cricket.

Hmmmm. There certainly doesn't look to be any prospect of rain at Eden Park. This game is being played in bright sunshine with hardly a cloud in the sky.

There's a short leg, leg slip, square leg and fine leg but Moeen is still going after the short bowling from Neil Wagner. He pulls a four just behind square again but then swishes and misses the ball completely. New Zealand will be encouraged. Moeen does not look comfortable.

Don't rule out the big yorker too.
