That four allowed Bairstow to get off the mark but now he doubles that tally with a much better stroke. An on drive beats the diving mid on and that should settle Jonny B.

BJ Watling got a fingertip on it. Jonny Bairstow had a nervous look on his face when he flicked it. It was a tough chance but I think Watling will be disappointed not to take it.

A chance for the Kiwis goes down.

Jonny Bairstow gets a tickle on one down the leg side but BJ Watling can't hold on as he dives low to his left. The replays show Watling got a good hand to that. He went one-handed but I think an international 'keeper should be taking that. A let off.

The ball goes for four too.

    Stokes 11, Bairstow 0

Three to Stokes who is visibly growing in confidence gets him to the non-striker's end. Trent Boult is coming back round the wicket to Bairstow, as he did to Joe Root last night. Unlike Root, Bairstow is able to duck out of the way of a bouncer and survives. It can't be underestimated how huge a blow for England it was losing Root last night.

There are 11 occasions when a team have been 200 behind with three wickets in hand heading into the final day and have batted through it to save the Test.

If you were in any doubt that runs don't matter, this over shows it. Stokes dabs the ball down into the leg side and he and Bairstow are able to just stroll through for a single as the deep fielder jogs in from the boundary with minimal effort.

One of those instances that leads to bemusement from the non cricket lovers. The rest of us are still engrossed.

Dave Hill: This could be over very quickly. After Jonny Bairstow the batting is weak.

James Beeching: Ah. So that Malan resistance we hoped for hasn’t gone to Ma-plan.

With Stokes on just six and Bairstow yet to score the scoreboard now has an entirely different complexion. There are not many fans in the ground so there's no celebratory atmosphere being built by the home fans. Instead it's almost silence which just adds to the tension.

Stokes adds another to his score before Bairstow luckily gets away with playing the ball on the bounce through to the slips when trying to leave.

August and After: Can’t sleep, turned on cricket, Malan out second ball, turned cricket off again, nightmares to follow...

James: Still think we will be bundled out for under 200... and there goes Malan.

Malan was really frustrated with that shot. He looked to the skies as he wandered past the celebrating Tim Southee.

Jonny Bairstow blocks out the rest of Southee's over. It's going to have to come from these two you feel.

That is exactly what New Zealand wanted in the first half hour. It was a slightly involunatry height and a nice catch-able height for Tom Latham. I don't think it moved off the pitch significantly.

It's five years to the day since England saved the Test here. Everyone remembers Matt Prior but lot of that was poor catching from New Zealand players. Kane Williamson must walk off knowing he has tried everything he could possibly do to get a result.

I think England should really last this out looking at the surface.

    Malan c Latham b Southee 23 (Eng 142-4)

That's entirely my fault, sorry. The commentator's curse strikes.

Tim Southee finds maybe a hint of movement but not a lot and it's enough to find the edge of Dawid Malan's bat to give a regulation catch to second slip.

Malan is just blocking on the back foot hesitantly and the ball is outside off stump. He didn't really have to play.

Perfect start for New Zealand. Not so for England.

Ben Stokes is doing the right thing and is looking to settle into this innings. So far he hasn't looked desperate to score despite his attacking instincts as he gets right behind a good over from Trent Boult and blocks out a maiden. Nothing to cause serious alarm so far.

Ruth Brooksbank: Prediction for the day: England will put up a fight but fall short by about 100 runs, but that will be completely overshadowed by more news from Australia.

Rob Holden: Not got much confidence for some strange reason. Prediction: All out for 225.

This pink ball is almost 50 overs old and it's showing it's age a little. There's a black patch on one side where the pink leather has peeled off.

Tim Southee doesn't seem to be looking for conventional swing. He is bowling with a cross seam but still manages to find the edge of Dawid Malan's bat. Malan's soft hands however ensure the ball goes down and between slip and gully for four.

Flemming Jensen: I really want to believe that England have a, let's say, 25-30% chance of saving this Test. But I don't. At all. And I hate that.

Ben Stokes, sponsorless bat in hand, skews an upish drive down the ground which leads to some loud yelps of "caaaatch" from the Black Caps fielders but it goes between bowler and mid off and Stokes collects two.

Stokes doesn't quite look completely sure. This is only his second Test innings since September, remember.
