Jenifer Moore: Don't think I've ever wanted us to draw as much as now.

Matt Greaves: Was there for Stokes’s 258 in Cape Twn. This half century was just as good to watch. #propertestinnings

The floodlights are now on at Eden Park with the skies a little overcast and grey. Trent Boult continues and Ben Stokes punches him down the ground for four after Tim Southee misfields down at long-off. He chased the the ball to the boundary and makes his ground but misses the ball with the scoop back. Lack a spoilt teenager he angrily spears the ball back.

  4. drinks break

Drinks breakpublished at 05:14 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

The pink ball is a little out of shape and needs changing so it's an opportune moment for a drinks break. The third umpire comes scurrying out with a black suitcase containing a selection of balls to choose from.

New Zealand's players are huddled together listening to some words from skipper Kane Williamson.

BJ Watling trying to lift New Zealand's bowlers during this plateau with plenty of encouragement from behind the stumps. The normally metronomic Colin de Grandhomme sends down a rare bouncer. Chris Woakes attempts a pull but is well through the shot and half-hearted appeal from Watling and co in the cordon.

Chris Wilson: Kiwi colleague of mine here in Christchurch getting very twitchy, I just comprehensively won a banter war with him. Threw in Monty's name just to polish it off.

New Zealand's go-to man Trent Boult is back into the attack. Things have got a little twitchy for Kane Williamson's side after a period without a wicket since the break.

Boult sends a loosener down leg side early in his over and BJ Watling dives and takes it brilliantly one-handed to prevent the byes. Superb keeping.

Boult starts this spell with a maiden.

Stokes deserves the applause. New Zealand have got to grudgingly say well played. He has organised his batting well and has got a good stride in. He is a major stumbling block for New Zealand.

50 for Ben Stokespublished at 05:06 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

Ben Stokes brings up his half-century after he punctures the field through cover off Colin de Grandhomme.

The trumpeter in the crowd starts playing the Great Escape. Are England starting to believe?

    51 overs left

Ben Stokes edging closer to a half-century here. Not the prettiest drive you'll ever see as he plays the ball late from Tim Southee but nonetheless effective as it beats mid-off and scurries away for four.

A ball later England run two and Southee throws at the stumps from only a couple of metres away - partially in frustration - and England pick up another run from the overthrow.

I think the New Zealand fans will be starting to get twitchy. I don't think the players will be. Williamson will be feeling it more than anyone else but the question is how long he bowls his bowlers. Boult has only bowled a few but hasn't fared so well.

Colin de Grandhomme has nibbled it about on a length and Ben Stokes changes his approach of the fourth ball as he walks down the wicket and punches it through cover for a single. De Grandhomme pulls out of his run-up, for the second time in as many overs, off the final ball. He delivers it moments later and Chris Woakes blocks.

An uneventful over from the tall and fair-haired Tim Southee with just a single from Ben Stokes taken from it. England's next target will be to get that deficit down to under a 100.

Colin de Grandhomme into the attack and his wicket-to-wicket approach, landing the ball on a length, brings greater clarity of thought for Chris Woakes who blocks and leaves a maiden. None of the rash shots played in the previous two overs.

Ben Stokes leading by example with some lovely defence in that over from Tim Southee. He, of course, does not currently have maker's name to show. So I guess it's a case of 'show them the splice' or something of that ilk.
