There's a flicker of swing and he's missed that by a surprising amount. It was half-volley length but there was sideways movement and his off stump was knocked out of the ground. We all love Cook, but he's on the agenda as well now. Aside from that double-century in Melbourne, his highest score since August in Test cricket is 39.

    Cook b Boult 2 (Eng 6-1)

Oo-er. Mark Stoneman has looked the more shaky but it's opening partner Alastair Cook who departs first.

It's a lovely delivery from Trent Boult, angling in with enough late movement away to trick Cook into playing down the wrong line, with the ball clattering into off stump.

Cook did miss it by a fair old margin though and the footwork was all wrong for a ball of that length.

Jimmy Dawson: The definition of insanity: continuing to pick James Vince and expecting a different result.

Liam Reilly: So Graeme Swann said that England hadn't learned from the Ashes, and they immediately prove him right by bringing James Vince back.

Neil Virani: James Vince gets in after 58 all out. Liam Livingstone must have eaten Bayliss's delicious speckled pigeon., external

There's a bit of swing, but Stoneman is all over the place at the moment.

  5. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

Cook picks up one through gully, giving Southee a first go at Stoneman.

Oh dear, that is very loose - Stoneman wafts lazily at a wide one. He looks very unsure of himself out there so far.

  6. Eng 5-0published at 1.1 over

Alastair Cook flicks at one that swings back in towards the top of his pads. BJ Watling takes the catch behind and New Zealand go up.

No bat on it but they're asking about lbw too. Nothing doing for umpire Marais Erasmus. Looked to be going over and down.

  7. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

Oof, Mark Stoneman gets off the mark in lucky fashion, inside edging a drive just past his off stump and away for four.

Trent Boult hangs the next well outside off and Stoneman leaves.

The next two are absolute jaffers, just beating the outside edge as Stoneman prods uncertainly with no foot movement.

  8. Eng 1-0published at 0.1 overs

The first ball of the Test slides down leg and Alastair Cook tucks it comfortably off his pads for a single.

The players are out on the field in Christchurch.

Trent Boult has the ball in his hand. What damage can he do with the red one after his exploits with the pink ball last week.

This park is a haven of peace and tranquility. A perfect venue for cricket in this part of the world. We're sitting in what is basically a greenhouse.

  12. Why is it so difficult to win away from home?published at 22:53 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

England have lost five of their past six Test matches - in fact, the loss in Auckland was England's 10th loss in their past 12 overseas matches.

Since the start of 2016, England's away record in Test cricket is worse than all but Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

So why is it so difficult to win away? We've taken a look.

It's a good chance for England to look at Leach - I suspect back in England they may look at the balance of the side and go back to Moeen again.

The events in Cape Town took a lot of the focus off that England 58 all out. But the second half of the game was a bit like the old England, they made 350. I think England may have bowled first as well here if they'd won the toss. My friends from New Zealand are very defeatist, they say their team never backs it up and can't do it two weeks in a row.

England captain Joe Root on Sky Sports: "Thankfully I didn't have to make the decision. We'll look to make a big first innings score - it's important we play well in the first two hours and use all our skill to get through.

"It's very exciting for Jack Leach in particular. We need to change things round to find the best combination for getting 20 wickets and scoring over 400.

"Mark Wood has been getting his workloads up and this is a good opportunity for him."

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on TMS: "It looks like a good surface, it reminds me a bit of Eden Park, hopefully it will offer a bit in the morning and be a good surface throughout. The last game was a nice performance but it's important we put in the hard work again."

David Wood: At last, we’ve picked a specialist spinner who actually wants to do the job. Moeen has been batting as a specialist number eight. He has to go unless he can command a top five spot - and he hasn’t shown any signs of that for a long time. Vince??? Oh no!
