Arjun Singh: Simply outstanding from Bairstow and Wood. Was worth waiting up all night to see!

  4. Eng 271-8published at 83 overs

Not much movement from the new ball as Bairstow and Leach pick up a single each off Boult.

  5. Eng 269-8published at 82.1 overs

Boult to Bairstow. The England keeper chases one down leg and Watling takes the catch. Brief appeal but nothing doing, it flicked the back leg.

Matthew Lumby: I checked into room 250 at a Christchurch hotel last night and thought 'that's a good score', and, indeed, it is.

  7. Eng 269-8published at 82 overs

    Southee 21-5-50-5

Southee will try to move into outright fourth in that list as he targets the left-handed Leach.

The England debutant defends or leaves all six balls calmly. A maiden.

Tim Southee is now New Zealand's equal fourth highest Test wicket-taker. He's level with Chris Cairns on 218.

Eek, Boult curves one in at Bairstow's stumps and the keeper inside edges it streakily for four.

A single brings Jack Leach on strike for his first ball in Test cricket...he defends. And then he's off the mark with his second, scampering three as he drives nicely through mid-off.

  10. new ball

New ballpublished at 05:42 British Summer Time 30 March 2018

New Zealand will want to wrap this up quickly now and duly take the new ball.

Trent Boult is back into the attack...

It was quite ambitious from Wood trying to drive that one, but he provided really good support to Bairstow.

Jack Leach's whites really are very white - straight out of the wrapper.

That was an off-cutter again. But Mark Wood has done a really, really good job for England at number nine. Jonny Bairstow has been England's best player, as he has been for a lot of the last couple of years.

  13. wicket

    Wood b Southee 52 (Eng 259-8)

    Tremendous fun while it lasted.

Tim Southee targets the stumps with an off-cutter that finally beats Mark Wood's defences and rearranges his stumps.

Wood departs for a thrilling and crucial 52. What a knock from the Durham man, that was one of the most enjoyable, watchable spells from England during this grinding winter tour.

Terrific effort from Southee to pick up five wickets on what has looked a good pitch for batting, despite England's shambolic collapse.

  14. Eng 259-7published at 79.5 overs

Even the polite Kane Williamson must be spitting at this. Time for Tim as Southee returns to the attack, one wicket short of a five-for.

Oof. Southee sends down a vicious yorker that Wood does well to dig out in the end.

Rob Holden: Surely this is the break Mark Wood needs after his injury troubles. Has to bat at eight for the second innings, Broad at nine. Hopefully he can add to his performance with the ball and potentially make a man of the match performance.

Andy Dufty: I was going to bed an hour ago but this is special by Wood and Bairstow.

  16. Eng 257-7published at 79 overs

    Bairstow 77, Wood 51

Bairstow guides a single through point before Wood stands up to Wagner's short stuff and rocks a pull shot out to deep mid-wicket for one more.

A frustrated Wagner bangs down some more bumpers that Bairstow easily ducks sways away from.

  17. Eng 255-7published at 78 overs

No run from the last so Jonny Bairstow will regain the strike. Can these two bat through to the close now?

Great shot for Wood to bring up his 50 - he's getting a big hug from Jonny Bairstow, what a great knock from him! There's a smile as wide as the Tyne Bridge on his face.

  19. 50 runs

50 for Mark Woodpublished at 77.5 overs

    Eng 255-7

Sodhi offers a bit of width and Wood guides it down to third man - it won't go all the way but rolls far enough to allow the Durham man the two he needs to bring up a maiden Test fifty.

What a knock. Vital runs for England. He left well early on and has hit some majestic shots as he's looked to kick on.

  20. 6 runs

    Eng 252-7published at 77.2 overs

Blimey. Brutal strength from Jonny Bairstow to clear the fence with a drive over extra cover as Ish Sodhi strays too full.
