With regard to the batting crisis currently would it not be worth bringing in the old guard for a few Tests, i.e. Ian Bell still naturally gifted and still far better than Vince.

Bairstow is going through all the checks but looks OK to continue.

That's the cue for some drinks too.

That was a remarkable piece of cricket. De Grandhomme tested out the middie of the pitch, it hit his helmet, he jerked his head back and the helmet went towards gully - he's lucky the helmet didn't fall onto the stumps.

A nasty blow as De Grandhomme digs it in short and Bairstow goes for the pull but realises last minute the ball is getting big on him and tries to weave out of the way.

But he can't sway quickly enough and takes a blow to the grille, the helmet flying off his head as Bairstow jerks his head away.

All smiles from Bairstow straight away as the medics come out to check him over.

Niall Davey: Must be time to split the coaching staff. Bayliss should stick to ODIs and we should get someone else dedicated to teaching the batting line-up not to give their wicket away.

Wood works it off his hips for a couple before pulling through mid-wicket for a scampered three that brings up the 200 for England.

Excellent effort from the Durham man to support Bairstow. How long can England draw this partnership out?

Colin de Grandhomme returns and is clattered away to the fence as Bairstow scythes it through point, playing late and judging the swing well.

Brief words between Bairstow and Wagner. Words between the umpires - the Kiwi did stray with the limit of how many short balls you can bowl in an over there.

A tough chance. On Bairstow goes.

After leaving four short balls in a row, Jonny Bairstow goes after one and gets a fine nick on it but BJ Watling can't cling on, jumping above his head behind the stumps.

    Bairstow 53, Wood 10

The England fans belts out a rendition of "Oh, Jonny Bairstow" to the tune of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes off You".

They'll need a song for Mark Wood's batting soon too. The Durham man clatters Tim Southee through the covers for four before exchanging singles with Bairstow.

The field was up because he wanted to keep Bairstow down that end, so he banged it in and it was a beautiful pull shot. The sadness from an English perspective is that of their seven batsmen, three have looked capable of staying in - the other four have provoked no confidence whatsoever.

Neil Wagner is back. He won't get to rough up Mark Wood yet though, with Jonny Bairstow facing.

Bang! Wagner digs it in at the keeper, who pulls over the in-field and away for four.

And that's four more! Another banged in delivery and Bairstow pulls it a bit squarer for back-to-back boundaries.

With that, Bairstow also brings up a fine fifty. An excellent knock in adverse circumstances.

If I remember rightly, in the first Test the first wicket of all three innings fell with the score on six. That happened for the fourth successive time today. Does Andrew know whether this constitutes some sort of record for the same wicket falling on the same score in successive innings?

TMS's Andrew Samson replies: The first New Zealand wicket in Auckland fell on eight. But it's three successive innings for England - and the first time it's happened three times to a Test side.
