Four! Ooft, that's a shot and a half from Alastair Cook, holding himself perfectly to push the ball past Faheem Ashraf.
And again, just for good measure! This time Cook pings Faheem away through cover.

Anthony Walton: Only England can make you look forward to the official start of summer for weeks and then pray for rain half an hour after they have gone into bat ...
John Petrie: Not too many questioning Alastair Cook's inclusion at the moment? Class is permanent
Cook 36, Bairstow 7
Alastair Cook can't resists the tiniest of nibbles at Hasan Ali's latest delivery, before he pretends that, actually, he was just trying to move his bat out of the way.
Away from Lord's, Ireland's Ed Joyce has retired from all forms of cricket. He'll take up a role within Cricket Ireland.

Since the glaze off the ball has gone it has started swinging, it is just nibbling around. The sun has gone in, Pakistan are all up for it and are looking for another wicket.
Alastair Cook unfurls another drive down the ground, but two fielders high-tail it after the ball and keep him to a single.
Cook then trots over for a chat with Jonny Bairstow, who gets turned around slightly as the ball nips in towards him.
Shot!
Down the ground goes Alastair Cook, shoving that front foot forward and pushing the ball straight past a tumbling Faheem Ashraf.
One thing has gone England's way this morning - Alastair Cook survived a review when he was on 23...
Hasan Ali is pushing the 90mph mark, as Jonny Bairstow lets delivery after delivery go through to the keeper.
A maiden, once again.

Steve Briddon: Can't help feeling this is result of a poor decision to bat first. It's a 50:50 on conditions, you're under pressure, new batting order and about to set the tone for the rest of the summer. Low risk option - have a bowl and build confidence.
Zak Dunstan: These England batsmen just dont have the grit required for Test cricket these days other than Cook, I couldn't imagine any of them digging in and scoring a 300-ball 100 when needed. This is the problem with players trying to be multi-format and not specialists.
There's something terribly unsurprising about this from England. It all felt a bit inevitable.
That said, Pakistan have been so good this morning, especially Hasan Ali and Mohammad Abbas. The perfect exploitation of England's weaknesses. And just like that, Faheem Ashraf beats Alastair Cook with another good 'un.

It's been Pakistan's morning, for sure. The ball has moved around, there have been some loose shots and England have got themselves in a bit of schtuck.
Hasan 5-1-17-2
Three runs for Jonny Bairstow, as he carves a fullish Hasan Ali delivery away.
Alastair Cook, meanwhile, satisfies himself with defending and spearing the odd single away. He's watching on as Bairstow gets beaten by an absolute peach from Hasan, who has been superb this morning.
I mean, this isn't a good look for Joe Root...
Cook 29, Bairstow 4
After wisely leaving a few outside off stump, Cook collects two with a push into the covers off Faheem as the sun pokes out at the famous old ground in St John's Wood

Daniel Johnson: What a ridiculous decision to bat first. Shambolic.
Arjun Singh: Amazing how my excitement for Test cricket can so quickly turn into despair. Horrific cricket from England at the moment.
Hasan 4-1-13-2
Jonny Bairstow, now batting five, has come out to join Alastair Cook, who is still there on 27
Dearie me, that's so good from Hasan Ali, finding some extra zip off the pitch and just getting the ball to fizz past the stumps. Bairstow responds by shoveling the next ball away for four.
Is it me, or does this all feel very familar?
Still. The sun's out...

We like this Hasan Ali, he bowled very well in the Champions Trophy and he's got tricks and energy. There was no foot movement from Malan, not committed forward or back, it was tentative poke outside the off-stump and a thin nick through to the keeper.
Malan c Sarfraz b Hasan 6 (Eng 43-3)
Ah...
Another wicket for Hasan Ali, and it seems to have come out of nowhere. Dawid Malan gets squared up a touch and it's the slightest of edges that goes through to Sarfraz. It's an easy take for the keeper-captain, and Hasan goes haring away in celebration.
Shot!
That's really nice from Dawid Malan, just turning his wrists and guiding Hasan Ali's first delivery away through for four. Eight fours for England this morning!
