Ooft.
Alastair Cook sends his very next delivery away for four, swivelling to hoick a short delivery square of the wicket. Lovely stuff.

It's pitched in line, but it's umpire's call on whether it would hit the stumps or not.
Not out it is. I thought that had pitched outside, but then, I'm a terrible umpire. Pakistan keep their review.

Graham Wright: Strange innings from Root, never seemed to get going. Our batting lineup isn't strong enough if coming in at three is going to affect him.
Morgan: You expect better from the England captain. Poor decision making.

14 oversAnd Dawid Malan is off the mark straight away, helping a delivery off his legs down through the covers for an easy single.
Joe Root's face, incidentally, when he edged that ball behind was a picture. He knew it was a bad decision roughly 0.01 seconds after he'd done it.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialThat was a poor shot. He was in no kind of rhythm of balance. When you're not balanced at the crease you're not trusting yourself and playing in a controlled, relaxed state. That was not a great four, fours are never all that great but that was probably the worst four we've ever seen from Joe Root.

12:02 BST 24 May 2018That's a really awful bit of cricket from Root. So unneccessary.
Anyway, Dawid Malan's the next man in.

Gone! Oh, that is not a good look.
Hasan Ali, having kept a tight line, spears his latest delivery right and Joe Root goes chasing after it. He loses his shape, arms thrown wide, desperately groping for the ball, and a thick edge goes through to Sarfraz behind the stumps.
Dearie me.

11:58 BST 24 May 2018It's a change of ends for Hasan Ali, which gives Mohammad Abbas a little breather.
Abbas has been excellent this morning - he's resting up with figures of 6-4-8-1.

BBC Sport at Lord'sThe Lord's stewards seem quite hot on roaming journalists looking for a seat in the stands. Twice I've been moved on. "You can't sit here. Sit with the staff." It's probably fair enough. The last thing a paying punter wants is me squatting in their seat.

13 oversJoe Root and Alastair Cook satisfy themselves with plonking a few singles here and there, before Cook gets forward and defends.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialAbbas is a skilful bowler, he has the ability to take the ball away from the left-hander and bring it back in. I don't think it will do a great deal for too long, we've seen Cook play some lovely shots, he looks in good form. Stoneman will be back in the pavilion knowing it's another opportunity missed. You feel he will have to get a decent score.

11:54 BST 24 May 2018Another change for Pakistan, with Faheem Ashraf brought into the attack.
The all-rounder made his debut against Ireland - he made 15 with the bat and finished with 0-10 with the ball.

Mohammad Abbas has decided to come around the wicket to Alastair Cook for a bit.
He doesn't quite nail it first up, sending down a wide delivery that Sarfraz has to wander some way across to collect, before Cook dabs down to third man for four. Soft hands all the way.

BBC Sport at Lord'sFor research purposes, I've inspected the champagne bar at the Nursery End of the ground. The most expensive bottle comes in at more than £300. They only accept card payments.

11 oversThere's a gentleman in the crowd who has a hat on and a wooden spoon attached to the hat. This is already my favouite thing about this Test.
Joe Root, who isn't getting distracted by members of the crowd, twists and prods his way through a Hasan Ali maiden.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match SpecialIt's the slope that's forcing Cook to play at these outside off stump, He's worried about the ball coming back.
