  1. Eng 25-1published at 10 overs

    Abbas 5-4-3-1

Oh! Another fine delivery from Mohammad Abbas, the ball nipping past Alastair Cook's bat at the very last second.

And again! Cook's just dangling his bat out slightly and it's giving Abbas something to aim at. Cracking stuff from the seamer.

There's a little bit of movement out there, a bit of swing, bit of seam. We've already seen a ball bounce through to the keeper so there are cracks there as well.

That's.... going to sting, I'm afraid.

Hasan Ali gets one to lift off the pitch and nip back in to Joe Root, who misses the ball with his little shovel drive and gets a hearty whack in the stomach for his trouble. He wanders around like John Wayne for a little while, before recovering enough to nab a single.

A change of bowling - Hasan Ali is replacing Mohammad Amir.

Amir's just struggled to find his line this morning. He's registered figures of 4-1-18-0.

This is how Mark Stoneman fell earlier this morning...

  6. Eng 23-1published at 8 overs

    Cook 17, Root 1

Mohammad Abbas purses his lips as he pushes a ball into Joe Root's pads, but it's leg-sidey and Root meanders his way through for a bye.

Sarfraz then gets some pats on the back as he chucks himself away to the left to collect a delivery that swings and just keeps on going.

Ben Wire: Suggest we get Bill Murray to play Mark Stoneman in a dark comedy about English batting, because so far it feels like Groundhog Day.

  8. Eng 22-1published at 7 overs

A quick single gets Joe Root off the mark, and gives him a little bit of payback on Alastair Cook, who has to hurry himself to get down the other end.

Jonny Bairstow is having a good gawp through his binoculars at something from up on the England balcony. Surrey's Ollie Pope is also there, having a chat with Mark Ramprakash.

    Abbas 3-2-4-1

Another tidy over from Mohammad Abbas, who nips consecutive deliveries past Alastair Cook's off stump.

Cook thuds another lovely drive straight towards the waiting fielder at cover, which has him muttering ruefully to himself.

Here are Joe Root's stats when he bats at three...

    .
  12. Eng 21-1published at 5 overs

    Cook 17, Root 0

Smiles all round between Joe Root and Alastair Cook, although I imagine that Root wouldn't have been smiling had that throw connected.

The England captain takes a moment to settle himself down, before seeing out the rest of Amir's over.

    Close!published at 4.3 overs

    Eng 21-1

Dearie me, Alastair Cook's nearly run Joe Root out!

Cook calls Root through for a sharp single - so sharp, in fact, that a sprinter might have struggled to make it. The fielder at mid-off snatches the ball and takes aim, but he misses and Root slides his bat home.

  15. Eng 20-1published at 4.2 overs

Joe Root, now batting at three, has wandered out to join Alastair Cook.

Mind you, he can stand and watch at the minute - back-to-back boundaries for Cook, as Mohammad Amir loses his line and Cook makes the most of it.

He was trying to drive it and it's not driveable. It's not there on length. He's done it twice now, looking to drive when it's not quite there. He's got a bit of something this lad. You want to be saying nice things about England, but you can't just say that was a good ball.

    Stoneman b Abbas 4 (Eng 12-1)

    Oh!

Mark Stoneman has been absolutely done over by Mohammad Abbas. It's lovely bowling from the Pakistan seamer, who has had the ball moving both ways.

Stoneman didn't know what to do. Caught on the crease, he pushes a loose drive forward, and the ball sneaks through and rearranges his stumps. Ooft.

  19. Eng 12-0published at 3 overs

Three slips and a gully in place for Mohammad Amir, but he lets out a grunt of irritation as he spears one down leg and Alastair Cook tickles it away for a boundary.

The response? An absolute beauty that angles in and beats Cook's gentle push forward. Cook rounds off the over with a glorious cover drive, holding the pose as the ball races away for four.
