Cook calls Root through for a sharp single - so sharp, in fact, that a sprinter might have struggled to make it. The fielder at mid-off snatches the ball and takes aim, but he misses and Root slides his bat home.

Joe Root, now batting at three, has wandered out to join Alastair Cook.

Mind you, he can stand and watch at the minute - back-to-back boundaries for Cook, as Mohammad Amir loses his line and Cook makes the most of it.

The response? An absolute beauty that angles in and beats Cook's gentle push forward. Cook rounds off the over with a glorious cover drive, holding the pose as the ball races away for four.
