What a tame dismissal that is. That's a real strangle. Cook has done a lot of hard work and that feels like a soft way to get out. It's a big wicket for Pakistan.
Cook c Sarfraz b Hasan 46 (Eng 104-2)
That's a sickener for Alastair Cook and England.
Hasan Ali is in for Mohammad Amir and bangs it down back of a length. Cook aims a pull stroke but mistimes it and gloves it through to the keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.
Cook groans and starts his walk off even before he's given out by the umpire. An assured innings comes to a soft end.
Cook 45, Root 26
Shadab Khan continues and Alastair Cook flicks through midwicket for a single that brings up the 100 for England. For the loss of just one wicket. Turns out it is possible.
A bit of turn but Joe Root spots it, opens the face and runs the ball away for a couple.
A few lovely wristy clips from Joe Root so far. Here's the latest one for your viewing pleasure...

Mohammad Amir strains for the yorker but Alastair Cook picks it up and clips it away wide of mid-on for two before tucking into off for one more.
England will take this just sedately drifting to the close. Can Pakistan strike in the last 15 minutes?
Cook 41, Root 24
Decent start from Shadab, finding a hint of turn off the dry pitch but Cook and Root cover up well, adding one from the over.
Not long left in the day and we're finally going to see our first bit of spin.
Leg-spinner Shadab Khan is into the attack. Can he follow his fifty with a couple of quick wickets?

Jonny Bussell: Is there a more beautiful sight in cricket than Joe Root’s cheeky smile when he’s batting well?
Cook steers Amir square for a couple before taking advantage of a mis-field to pick up one more.
Excellent cricket from England's most experienced two batsmen to just keep the scoreboard ticking over, while protecting their wickets well.
Has anyone else clocked tomorrow's forecast yet?
Cook chases an Amir delivery down leg side and Sarfraz snaffles it before going up for caught behind.
Nothing doing, that clipped the pad but not the bat.

Joe Root looks very good and very dangerous. He can afford to play across the line, because the pitch is so good.
Cook 37, Root 24
A case study in late day frustration:
Joe Root dances down the pitch to Mohammad Abbas but decides just to defend back to the bowler, who picks up and tries to throw down the stumps. Root is back and Abbas misses anyway but gives the smiling England captain a stare down.
Root then clips a full, straight one through wide mid-on for four with aplomb. Abbas looks thoroughly miffed.

Alex Thomas: Will be interesting to see how the middle order play today & tomorrow, now they haven’t got to open as well... when was the last time we reached 500?!

Amir strays wide and Root drives it out across the practice pitches for a couple.
The next is fuller but wide enough for Root run it down through third man and the ball zooms away from the chasing fielder for four.
Amir responds by beating the outside edge. A decent contest, with Amir bowling well but just not finding the same movement that Broad did the damage with earlier on.
England are halfway to Pakistan's total.

Olympic triathlon silver medallist Jonny Brownlee, speaking to Test Match Special: "I used to be a cricket captain for my school. I was really bad at cricket, so I'm not sure why I was captain. I think my games teacher liked me!
"Triathlon is a summer sport, like cricket, so occasionally I made a choice between the two. I was far, far better at triathlon so I chose that. I used to do cross-country and rugby in the winter."
Oof. Good delivery from Abbas, swinging in to the pads and Cook inside edges it away through fine leg for four.
The odd streaky shot aside, Cook and Root have maintained England's dominance after Jennings fell.

Clever bowling from Amir, who hides the ball in his hand and dupes Root with one that swings away from the right-hander instead of his stock delivery that swings in.
Root dangles his bat out and the ball zips past the outside edge on the angle.

Pakistan needs wickets. It looks a hard job. The slips came out very quickly.
