Two things about that - firstly, it wasn't a bad shot. It's a good ball and a good length. Secondly, if I'm watching that as a selector, I like what I saw. Rather than somebody who makes 20-odd and struggles, there's a lot of stuff there to like. The bending of the front knee was much improved.

    Ah.

After a positive start, Keaton Jennings falls, tentatively prodding at a decent ball from just back of a length that tickles the edge on the way through to Sarfraz Ahmed.

Scoring seems more difficult out there as soon as the sun disappears behind the clouds and Jennings had looked more nervy in the last few overs when he couldn't get on the front foot.

Still, some promising signs in that knock from the recalled opener.

The sun's just disappeared and that seems to make such a difference here.

A peach from Hasan to Cook, nipping away from back of a length past the outside edge.

Cook defends the rest - that's another maiden over for Pakistan.

The runs have dried up for England in the last few overs and Vic Marks knows why...

Even it's just a tad short and just a bit wide, Alastair Cook will punish you.

The England opener duly does that to Hasan Ali, picking up another boundary...

  6. Eng 51-0published at 15 overs

Jennings defends and leaves the final two balls. A maiden for Faheem.

  7. Eng 51-0published at 14.4 overs

Faheem gets it into Jennings' pads again and there's another brief appeal. He got an inside edge on this one though.

  8. Eng 51-0published at 14.3 overs

Keaton Jennings shoulder arms to one that nips back and hits him right at the top of the pads.

A brief appeal but that was going over. An interesting leave, though.

Hasan Ali goes round the wicket to Alastair Cook and gets it to nibble off the seam past the outside edge.

But Cook responds by driving through the covers for four. That's the 50 up for England and a first half-century opening stand since the second innings of the second Test in the Ashes.

England are in a terrific position. The ball certainly isn't swinging, the sun has popped out and this pair have set of very positively. Jennings has settled in most impressively.

    Cook 19, Jennings 27

Oooh, Faheem gets one to come back in to Jennings, who gets to it late and inside edges it away through fine leg for four.

Eek, he follows that with a wafty drive, his first really reckless shot of the innings. Pakistan had put square leg out so Jennings may have been anticipating the short ball and didn't move his feet at all.

He then has a tentative poke at the last. He needs to shrug those three balls off and settle back down.

England fans will be pleased not to have received a flurry of wickets clips so far this innings.

Have a delicious Keaton Jennings cover drive instead...

Bang! Slight width from Hasan and Cook rocks backs to scythe it past gully for four.

An excellent blend of attack and defence from this pair so far.

Duncan Mitchell: Cook always seems to up his tempo and intent if his opening partner does. I know Jennings has his critics but they seem to gel well as a pair.

Jennings shrugs off that lbw appeal and defends the rest of the over. A maiden for Faheem.

Faheem Ashraf also starts with a beauty, angled across and Keaton Jennings plays inside the line.

He then gets one through into the pads of Jennings and Pakistan go up.

That was pitching outside leg though and duly given not out.

Jennings responds to that pearler by clipping through square leg for two before Hasan strays wide and the England opener slaps it through point for four.

It's looking very good for batting out there now. Pakistan will make a double change with Faheem Ashraf in for Mohammad Amir next up.

England have negotiated Pakistan's opening bowlers with aplomb.
