  1. Pak 123-8published at 40.4 overs

Into the air by Hasan Ali, but the ball flies past a despairing Jos Buttler at gully, and away for four!

That wasn't well played at all by Hasan, getting his arms into a real tangle, but it's got him a boundary. And again! A slightly better drive, but again, the ball just goes wide of gully.

I know England got 180 at Lord's and got crushed but if Pakistan can get up to that and bowl in the same swinging conditions then they are still in the game.

  3. Pak 114-8published at 40 overs

I know it's swinging, and I know they still have to bat, but dearie me, isn't it nice to see England doing well for a bit?

Shadab Khan comes haring through for a single off Chris Woakes, before Haan Ali prods his way through the rest of the over.

The pitch is good but there are atmospheric conditions and this is Headingley - the ball moves around. It's looking like it could be a three-day Test match. Stuart Broad has been brilliant, he's bowled some magic balls.

  5. Pak 113-8published at 39 overs

    Anderson 14-6-30-3

Hasan Ali is in - oh, and he's nearly out to his first delivery!

A lovely, swinging delivery from James Anderson, and it somehow nips past the bat.

That is terrible from Mohammad Amir. He was just swinging at everything and that was just a matter of time.

    WICKETpublished at 38.5 overs

    Amir c Bairstow b Anderson 13 (Pak 113-8)

    A touch inevitable, perhaps?

Mohammad Amir has been going after anything and everything, and it's brought about his downfall. It's shortish from James Anderson, Amir swings his bat like he's playing baseball, and Jonny Bairstow only has to shuffle his feet across to take a comfortable catch.

Shadab Khan really is a number seven batsman. In fact, he could even bat higher. Although Pakistan are missing the injured Yasir Shah, at least their batting improves with Shadab coming in.

  9. Pak 113-7published at 38 overs

    Shadab 21, Amir 13

That's a nice flick of the wrists from Shadab Khan, turning a Chris Woakes yorker away from his toes and through mid-wicket for three.

We thought the Western Terrace would warm up. Well-oiled after lunch, there are plenty on their feet, patting around a couple of beach balls. Chris Woakes, when he was down at long leg, was serenaded with "stand up if you love Chris Woakes". Jonny Bairstow, in between deliveries, is more interested in what's going on in the stands than anything on the pitch.

  11. Pak 109-7published at 37.3 overs

An inflatable beach ball has stopped play.

Keaton Jennings jogs across and, rather than handing it to a steward, lobs it back into the Western Terrace. Excellent work.

And on the subject of bowlers, here comes Chris Woakes.

He's replacing Stuart Broad, who has figures of 3-38 under his belt.

It's not a bad time for a young bowler to be on - if he picks up a wicket or two, it will give him great confidence for the second innings.

  15. Pak 106-7published at 37 overs

    Shadab 17, Amir 18

James Anderson continues, three slips lurking behind the batsman, and Mohammad Amir lets the first few deliveries fly through to the keeper.

Shadab Khan rounds off the over by clubbing a wide delivery down to third man for four.

  17. Pak 101-7published at 36 overs

Shot! On the up from Shadab Khan, meeting a fuller Stuart Broad deliver and lashing it through extra cover for four.

A shovel off the pads is neatly fielded by a tumbling man at mid-wicket to end the over. Meanwhile, Michael Holding has just realised he got Sarfraz Ahmed's name wrong at the toss this morning, and called him Sarfraz Narwaz instead.

Here are the other two wickets to fall after lunch.

Stuart Broad didn't even bother appealing for this one...

Before James Anderson got in on the lbw act as well.

  19. Pak 97-7published at 35 overs

A awkwardly angled drive brings Shadab Khan a run, before James Anderson nips successive deliveries past Mohammad Amir's bat.

This is about as far removed from the Melbourne Test during the Ashes as it is possible to be. That was a Test of such soporific tedium that even I was bored.
