  1. Eng 16-1published at 8 overs

    Stoneman 2, Root 8

Joe Root opens the face of the bat and runs Mohammad Abbas through backward square for three.

Abbas pings a few tempters across Mark Stoneman before Stoneman has a swish at one that slides just past the outside edge of his bat. Testing times.

Stoneman plays quite nicely at times and looks OK but somehow he plays at a ball he shouldn't be playing at. It's not that he looks out of his depth, he doesn't.

  3. Eng 13-1published at 7 overs

Mark Stoneman gets off the mark in lovely style, turning Mohammad Amir off his pads and away through the covers for a couple.

Ooft, he's almost out a few balls later, though! A thick outside edge drops just in front ofsecond slip, who gets down low but can't get a hand under the ball.

  4. Eng 11-1published at 6.3 overs

Joe Root is a fan of taking quick singles.

Mark Stoneman, maybe not so much. He has to really stretch and dive as the fielder sweeps at cover and throws the ball. It was Root's call, but Stoneman had to crank up his pace at the last second.

Neil Boughton: How come the commentators bang on about the 'perfect batting conditions' yet it is the Pakistani bowlers who look more threatening! Are they doing something we're not?

Paul Cartwright: And Winslet and Di Caprio now take their places at the bow of the stricken liner....

  6. Eng 10-1published at 6 overs

    Abbas 3-1-4-1

    A peach from Mohammad Abbas!

There's just a hint of movement and it's enough to beat the edge of Joe Root's bat as he pushes forward. Root holds his pose, taking a long look at the pitch, before he angles the next delivery off his pads for a couple.

Jon Dunn: Full. Straight. Didn’t swing. Didn’t seam. 80mph. Awful dismissal for Cook.

Skyser: Just been to buy my packed lunch for Lord’s tomorrow. Will I never learn?

    Root 2, Stoneman 0

Babar Azam is at the ground, his arm heavily plastered up as he sits with his team-mates on the sidelines.

Amir gets a deliberately to take off, the ball fired across Joe Root who just hoicks his bat out of the way at the last second. Amir gets a round of applause from the slips in response.

  9. Eng 6-1published at 4.1 overs

A boundary! Well, four leg byes, as it happens, Mohammad Amir trailing a delivery into Joe Root's pads.

    There's swing there, though...

That is an AMAZING effort from chef Tommy Banks. Wow, I'm hungry.

Back on the pitch and Joe Root is off the mark, pushing into the covers and taking the single that's on offer. Mark Stoneman takes his time steadying himself before Mohammad Abbas swings the final two balls past him.

England have to clip the loose ones away and cut out the risky ones outside the off stump. They have to bat ugly and get a foundation for the shot players like Stokes and Buttler to take advantage later on

  14. Eng 1-1published at 3 overs

Oh, that's a beauty from Amir, the ball seaming past Mark Stoneman's outside edge as he pushes forward in defence.

A good length from Amir, keeping it full, and Stoneman stays watchful. Maiden.

James: England probably will scrape 200 and take the match to a 4th day. That said I wouldn't be surprised if we get bundled out for 160 and it's all over today.

Small Man Peaky: England to limp to 250 all out. Rain tomorrow and Monday saves their blushes.

Andrew Dickens: Let's get 400 today England, no excuses

Umpire's call on Cook's dismissal, so he would have been out even if he reviewed.

Cook knew, though. It's such a good delivery from Mohammad Abbas, who has been excellent in this match.

You can't call that a bad shot, it's a good ball. If anything maybe he got his foot a little too far over and then you can't get your bat to the ball. That was a perfect example of a bowler pitching it up straight and it came back a little.

Cook lbw Abbas 1 (Eng 1-1)

    Pakistan strike!

If that isn't out, then I'll eat my hat. Mohammad Abbas gets a delivery to jag into Alastair Cook's front pad and Cook just straight up misses the ball. He pushes his bat forward a second after the ball clatters into the knee roll.

Up goes the umpire's finger and Cook barely even considers the review. Off he goes.
