Pakistan have probably only made one mistake, the captain's hook shot just before tea. When they get the ball in hand and they are on top it doesn't really matter what the pitch is they will find the length to bowl and it won't be easy facing this attack.

They have caught better, bowled better and batted better, they look better coached than England - I never thought I would be saying that about an England side playing at Lord's in May.

Four! Mohammad Abbas steadies himself and clobbers a pull shot away to the boundary. It's a no ball to boot from Stuart Broad.

Broad's response is a lovely little delivery that nips past the outside edge as Abbas comes wandering forward.

I sent Alastair Cook a message last night asking what he'd done to deserve fielding at short-leg and he replied 'almost running the skipper out and dropping two catches!'

  5. Pak 351-8published at 111 overs

That's a decent over from Mark Wood, bowling into the pads, and Mohammad Abbas scampers through for a leg bye.

Mickey Arthur is watching on from the Pakistan balcony and tucking into a breakfast sarnie at the same time. Excellent work.

Warm at Lord's, so much so that I felt the need to shed my jacket on the 20-minute walk to the ground.

Outside, a lively steward told us it is a day for shades and suncream. It feels like a time to be batting.

Good news for England. If they are no better than they were on Thursday, this one will be over today.

  7. Pak 350-8published at 110.1 overs

    Lead by 166

Mark Wood's first delivery is full and straight, and Mohammad Abbas covers up in defence.

Here we go! Mohammad Amir, on 19, and Mohammad Abbas are making their way out to teh middle.

No Babar Azam, so England need one wicket before they can bat again. By the looks of things, it'll be Mark Wood to open up.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England have been poor, we can't hide behind that, but we should praise Pakistan. They gave us a lesson in how to play in English conditions. We bowled too short and wide and they lined it up well. A draw is not out of the equation. Can we score 400 and put the pressure back on?

BBC Weather's Darren Bett: "Just a 10% chance of a shower during the afternoon session today with high humidity. Tomorrow things are much more difficult, with a chance of rain on and off throughout the day. That lot should clear away on Monday, a risk of potential showers but a lot of warmth which should help the England bowlers to bowl Pakistan out!"

  13. 'You can score runs on this wicket'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

    BBC Test Match Special

England bowler James Anderson: "We've got a chance to get back into this game but we've got to bat really well to give ourselves a chance of winning. The positive thing for us is that you can score runs on this wicket, it has improved, hopefully we can get a couple of big hundreds."

Should England have bowled first? "In hindsight potentially, but if we can better Pakistan's first innings that will give us roughly 200 to bowl at. I'm not sure what else Joe could have done yesterday as captain, we went to plans for certain batsmen that we thought would have worked and we could have bowled them out a lot cheaper if we had taken our chances."

    Waqar Younis
    Former Pakistan pace bowler

I never thought Pakistan would do that well, especially with no Younis and Misbah, the expectation was not from this team and they have surprised the entire country.

  15. Babar out of seriespublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

Bad news for Pakistan's Babar Azam, who made an excellent 68 yesterday before retiring hurt.

Babar was struck on the left wrist by a Ben Stokes delivery, and has been rueld out of the remainder of the two-match Test series.

"Normally with these sort of fractures, recovery varies between four to six weeks." Pakistan physio Cliff Deacon said.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I don't think England can save this, unless the rain comes. You look at the history of Test match cricket and very rarely do you save it from here.

Pakistan will bowl better than England have bowled. England created chances but didn't take them. We've seen one or two keep low, so it's not going to be easy for the England batsmen.

  18. 'We've been training so hard'published at 10:42 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

Mark Wood spoke to Test Match Special after yesterday's play.

"We tried to bowl a bit fuller like Pakistan did in the first innings," he said.

"It's hard when you drop catches but honestly, the amount of fielding we've done this week it's hard to believe that they go down because we've been training so hard."

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Maybe one reason Cook has dropped a couple is one minute he is at short-leg under the helmet and the next he is back at slip again. There is no hard and fast rule for who fields where but there is a rhythm to the game.

  20. Five drops and counting...published at 10:38 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

There was a general sloppiness about England's fielding yesterday.

Five catches have gone down during their 110 overs in the field, and there's been a lot of shuffling about with England's fielders.

"When you see too much inter-changing with the field positions, particularly in key areas, it makes England look like a side that needs oiling." Michael Vaughan said on TMS.

Jonny Bairstow, however, was having none of that.

"It's good to have people to be able to field in different positions," he said.

"You can look into as much as you wish and make up whatever ideas you want about who fields where."
