I'd be giving a short, sharp speech because I think players listen more to those. I'd say "we got ourselves into this mess, now we've got to bat better and get ourselves out of it."
A run! England are off the mark!
Alastair Cook tickles a full delivery through the off side and scampers through for one. Mark Stoneman then lets the final ball of the over go zipping through to Sarfraz behind the stumps.

At Lord's, the highest first innings lead by a team that went on to lose is 171 by South Africa in 1955.

Mohammad Amir will bowl the first over of England's innings.
He comes in to Alastair Cook, who promptly lets the ball go through to the keeper.
England are under way...
Here's how Pakistan's innings came to an end, with Mohamamd Abbas edging a snorter from Mark Wood through to the keeper.
Right. Pakistan have a 179 run lead. England have conditions on their side.

Now it's all about the batsmen, can they show some discipline? It's never easy when you are so far behind but everything is perfect for batting.
It is really such a nice day for batting. Sunny, blue skies, a pitch that is hardening up.
Surely England can't collapse again? Surely...?
A look at the England bowling figures...

Pakistan played great, with a huge amount of discipline and some flamboyant shots along the way. England bowled ok at times, poorly and times but the fielding, if they were given a mark, would be an E.
Abbas c Bairstow b Wood 5 (Pak 363-9)
And that'll be that!
Mark Wood's three ball bouncer barrage pays off as Mohammad Abbas fends at a delivery aimed at his throat, and gets an edge through to Jonny Bairstow. There's no Babar Azam for Pakistan, so they end their first innings with a lead of 179.

The team with the best record in any month of the year is England in May. They have played 34, won 24 and lost four - one of those was in West Indies and two finished in June.
So, England have only ever lost one match in England that started and finished in May.

Stuart Broad's not a happy bunny. Mark Stoneman throws down the stumps at the non striker's for no real reason, and Pakistan scamper through for a single. Stoneman apologises while Broad glares at him.
Meanwhile, a gentleman in the crowd does an excellent job of surreptitiously cracking open a bottle of champagne without spilling a drop.
Stuart Broad strays onto the hip of Mohammad Abbas, and he takes the opportunity to nick a quick bye.
Oh, and that's four! Short from Broad, and Mohammad Amir swings his arms and deposits Broad back over his head and into the boundary rope on the bounce. What a shot!

There is nothing through the air, no swing, no seam movement and Mohammad Amir looks like he is settling in.
Hmm. Dom Bess is limping around a little as he moves around the field. He seems to be okay, although he's rubbing at his right thigh.
Mohammad Amir shows Mark Wood a straight bat, and he calmly defends his way through a maiden.

England started the day with some much-needed catching practice.
Chris Woakes, left out of the side, did the throwing.
What a thoroughly decent chap.

Mohammad Abbas is going to swing his way through his innings, as he tries to deposit Stuart Broad's third ball into the stands and ends up getting a bottom edge on it.
Broad then beats the bat with ball after ball, and Abbas can only stand there and grin at him.
