Dom Bess' exuberance gets the better of him and he scampers a very risky single to wide mid-off. In fact, he'd have been gone if the throw had hit, even with his dive.

He's just hit a tremendous drive through extra cover, but Dawid Malan has shown some nice touches all round the wicket, including this deft sweep off Shadab Khan for four...

Dawid Malan had been circumspect, and not quite getting his weight back towards the ball. That's the first time I've seen him really commit. It's a wonderful stroke. He's just getting his confidence back.

Magnificent from Malan, striding forward purposefully to crash it through extra cover for four.

He started somewhat tentatively but the Middlesex man is looking increasingly assured.

Here is Faheem Ashraf, returning in place of Mohammad Abbas. Pakistan have around 15 minutes until tea to strike.

You really want a deciding third Test. There's been some really good cricket.

Having no third Test feels a bit like watching an hour and three quarters of a really good film, and then the satellite goes down with 15 minutes to go.

  8. Eng 190-3published at 59 overs

    Bess 38, Malan 20

Shadab tosses one up to Malan, who clips it through mid-wicket for one.

Bess covers up nicely to defend the rest of the over.

Ah yes, I remember Graham Thorpe cracking a four to win the game and leave Tudor on 99.

No room for sentimentality in Test cricket, eh?

The highest score by an England nightwatchman is Alex Tudor's 99 not out at Edgbaston in 1999.

Malan enjoyed that. There was a real sense of satisfaction after he hit that stroke.

A couple more for Dom Bess as he runs the ball off the face of the bat down to third man.

Bess then advances down the pitch to work Mohammad Abbas through mid-wicket for three. A terrific knock so far that must be horribly frustrating for Pakistan.

Shot! Oh he liked that one - Dawid Malan walks at Abbas and punches his straight down the ground for four. Runs returning for England after a bit of a strangle by the tourists.

John Rodway: Zaheer Abbas in his 274 v England in 1971. As kids we tried all summer in the garden to recreate that cover drive of his. We failed but he made us life long fans of the game.

Pakistan had just regained a little bit of control with the ball, but these two are looking very organised and patient.

Whoops. Dawid Malan defends one straight down, the ball bouncing back and almost flicking the stumps.

Mohammad Abbas, round the wicket, slides the last past the outside edge and grimaces. A maiden over and nearly a wicket there. Pakistan need more of those to build the pressure - the scores are still level.
