It was a brute of a ball - in one-day cricket that hip-high length is the hardest to hit.

Maybe there is no post-playing career as an umpire for James Anderson.

Replays show that flicked Jason Roy's trousers and not the inside edge of his bat.

A wicked, venomous ball but no reward for Big Billy.

    On we go.

That really ripped through, there was some anger in it.

I think that's an inside edge.

  5. Australia reviewpublished at 4.5 overs

Now then, is it six and gone?

Billy Stanlake whips it through Jason Roy, Tim Paine snaffles the catch and Australia all go up.

Given no out but Australia are very keen and send it upstairs.

    Eng 38-0published at 4.4 overs

Stanlake strays into the pads and Roy smacks it square for four.

Big Billy responds by going short and Roy swipes it high but clear enough of the fielders to pick up four to mid-wicket.

And that's even bigger! Another short ball and Roy smacks it flat and hard into the stands over deep square leg.

Adam: Bairstow has gone the over after someone on the live text has said he's batting well. Can we hold off today?

He's survived two overs since those three consecutive boundaries now...

Good response by Australia to that Bairstow barrage as Richardson sends down five dot balls at the Yorkshireman.

The sixth is short though and Bairstow picks it up and whips it away backward of square leg for four.

The form Jonny Bairstow is in is frightening. I often bowl to him in the nets and you become tentative as to where you're going to bowl at him.

Jason Roy unfurls a big drive that ends up slicing away over backward point towards the rope but Andrew Tye scurries round to get a boot on it and save two.

It was effective enough but I hate seeing that - get down to it and use your hands! The seam bowler looks like he has no interest in diving about the field, mind.

Roy then punches down the ground but some good fielding by Marcus Stoinis (diving to his right and using his hands!) prevents any runs.

Good over from Billy Stanlake, just two off it.

On a track like this you'd expect a 350 target - but go as hard as you can for as long as you can and 400 is attainable.

I always fancied myself to get some movement through the air here. It's a little different with the white ball to the red ball, but yes I always enjoyed playing here.

Jhye Richardson to open the bowling with Billy Stanlake.

Jonny Bairstow plays a low pull shot to one that didn't lift that much and scampers a well-run two. You've got have your eye in to play that.

And that! Bairstow punches deliciously down the ground for four.

Whack! Richardson offers width and Bairstow flays it up through the covers for four more. It was near the diving fielder but hit so hard, the ball was already past him.

Make that three fours in a row! Bairstow finishes up his barrage with a sumptuous clip through mid-wicket to the fence. Bang. Bang. Bang.

  14. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

Jonny Bairstow plays pretty much the same shot to Jason Roy to get off the mark before his partner leans on a forward defence that ends up rolling away for a couple.

It may be a bowling afternoon but you sense there'll be plenty of runs too.

For those of us who have played a lot of cricket here at Trent Bridge, it feels like a bowling afternoon. Whenever it is breezy, as it is today, it feels damp.

Francis Edwards: Still find it so strange that Curran is overlooked for Wood. Wood is slower than Plunkett and never has match-winning performances. Curran started his career strongly against good batting. Willey can at least take wickets early on sometimes.
