Moeen would have been gone there. A real opportunity.

  2. Eng 55-5published at 15 overs

Should be six. Moeen Ali takes an awful single and wasn't in the frame. The throw from Travis Head is at the base of the stumps, when he probably had time to get it to the hands of Nathan Lyon, who tamely jumped out of the way. Australia are going to sneak another over in before the break.

I'm assuming that the England cricketers are sacrificing their wickets so they can get back in to watch the football.

Moeen Ali is the new man. England can take comfort from the fact they have a batting line-up longer than a toilet roll. Batting, though, looks fraught with danger, despite a blameless pitch and glorious sunshine. Both Moeen and Buttler can only use the edge. Maybe only one more over left before the break.

This is a serious situation for England.

There was no need for Hales to play that shot. He did well to reach it. Poor game management.

    Hales c Paine b K Richardson 20 (Eng 50-5)

Blimey. This is a pretty awful way to go. Alex Hales looks to drive a very wide delivery from Kane Richardson but only succeeds in getting an edge through to wicketkeeper Tim Paine. England could be out of this by the time they head to the pavilion for a brew.

  8. Eng 50-4published at 13 overs

    Target 206

England have six against Panama. Harry Kane deflects one in off his heel for a hat-trick.

Still Ashton Agar, England happy to nudge and nurdle the ball around a sun-kissed Old Trafford. There is probably two, maybe three overs to go before the interval.

That could easily have gone to mid-off. I find that a little bit risky, just coming up to the break. England need Jos Buttler there, just ticking it over.

  10. Eng 47-4published at 12 overs

Stanlake is, however, withdrawn, replaced by the bearded Kane Richardson. Not nearly as much pace - down in the low 80s. No slip, either. It feels like a different game, like a storm has been weathered. Tim Paine even comes up the stumps, with Buttler biffing over mid-off for four.

I'd be tempted to give Stanlake another couple of overs, and then keep a few for when the tail come in. You don't want to hold him back too long, though, because the game might be done and dusted. It's a juggling act.

  12. Eng 41-4published at 11 overs

    Target 206

Still Agar, Buttler very fortunate when an inside edge somehow misses the stumps and skips away for four. England are clawing their way towards the break. What have Australia got behind Stanlake

Joe Root has gone four innings without a half-century. It's the longest he's gone without one in this format since early 2015.

  14. Eng 34-4published at 10 overs

    Stanlake 5-1-18-3

Old Trafford always has pace and bounce, but at the moment this is more Waca than Manchester. Stanlake, huge smile on his face, flashes the white leather past Buttler's outside edge. The speedo is over 90mph. On the England balcony, Jonny Bairstow looks very glum. Finally, a bad ball. Hales cuts for four.

Perhaps England, psychologically, have taken their foot off the gas. Australia have put it in the right areas on a pitch that is starting to play a few tricks.

  16. Eng 28-4published at 9 overs

    Target 206

Remember, their will be an interval at 14:30 BST. It can't come quickly enough for England. Jos Buttler has joined Alex Hales, who has been an eyewitness to the Stanlake carnage. Ashton Agar back on. No offence, Ashton, but this game isn't about you right now. We want more Billy.

It's clipped Morgan's pad on the way through. More pace, more movement from Stanlake, and it's just nipped back into Morgan. England are looking a little nervy. They need a partnership - two guys to take hold of the game.
