  1. wicket

    Morgan b Stanlake 0 (Eng 27-4)

Bowled him! Billy Stanlake has done it again and England are in tatters. Eoin Morgan has his stumps splayed, the skipper done for nothing other than raw pace. Through the gate, bat sliding like curtains on a rail, middle and off disturbed. Stanlake will probably be man of the series the next time the Ashes are in Australia.

You can't always rely on the same players. You need different people each game to stand up.

  3. Eng 27-3published at 7 overs

Eoin Morgan joins Alex Hales. England need runs from the skipper. Nathan Lyon into the attack, greeted with a cover-driven four by Hales. Old Trafford is a little stunned. You still make England favourites, because they bat so deep. Australia will want to see 50-5.

It's that extra bounce again - it went at chest height to slip.

It's good bowling, again, from Stanlake. He's really lively today. Root had a slightly angled bat. It's not his best shot, and a very smart catch at first slip.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6 overs

    Root c Marsh b Stanlake 1 (Eng 23-3)

Game very definitely on. Billy Stanlake is causing all sorts of problems and Joe Root is the third wicket to fall. More pace and bounce from Stanlake, Root trying to punch off the back foot. Thick edge, held at head height by Shaun Marsh at first slip. 5-0 now in peril.

Australia are just inching their way back into the game.

There's that bounce we've been talking about from Billy Stanlake. The ball got big on Bairstow and bounced a touch. England have lost their two in-form players.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.1 overs

    Bairstow b Stanlake 12 (Eng 19-2)

Interesting. Jonny Bairstow goes, chopping on to his stumps off Billy Stanlake. Bairstow is trying to cut, but it bounces and is perhaps a bit close. Bottom edge, stumps disturbed. Game on?

I'd rather see a pitch like this that's got bounce and pace - something to encourage the bowlers to bowl quick. When it's slow, the cricket can get a bit stodgy.

  11. Eng 19-1published at 5 overs

Ashton Agar into his third over, tying Bairstow down with four successive dots. Tension until Bairstow breaks the shackles with a couple. Half-time in Russia. England 5-0 Panama. England 5-0 Australia?

5-0. Harry Kane again. I promise I'm not making it up.

  13. Eng 15-1published at 4 overs

    Target 206

Stanlake is tall and lean. He has the sort of haircut that is dished out to young men who sign up for the military. Jonny Bairstow flashes hard and gets his first boundary with an edge past slip. Believe it or not, England have another penalty...

One thing Australia can't do is make mistakes in the field when they're defending a small total. That should have been cut off.

  15. Eng 8-1published at 3 overs

    Target 206

4-0. John Stones again. A free-kick routine off the training ground. Honest. Meanwhile, back in the real world, Alex Hales clips Agar to the mid-wicket boundary. England's footballers are 4-0 up at the World Cup and the cricket team are going to beat Australia 5-0. What is going on? The 12-year-old me is going absolutely bonkers.

Francis Edwards: All teams should open with spin against Bairstow and especially Roy, starting off he’s a walking wicket against spin. Surprised it’s taken so long for teams to find out.

  17. Eng 3-1published at 2 overs

Good lord. Jesse Lingard has just scored an absolute worldie to put England 3-0 up against Panama. They're going to win the World Cup. Big Billy Stanlake (we're contractually obliged to call him 'big') shares the new balls. Full and straight. Sedate stuff from England so far in the face of some decent Aussie bowling.

Stanlake has been one of the positives for Australia in this series.

  19. Eng 2-1published at 1 over

    Target 206

Replays don't do Jason Roy any favours. He almost swung himself off his feet. Alex Hales is the new man. Useful to have an opener at three. I wonder if Agar will get another over, or if Australia will think he's done his job.

Roy's gone for a big shot and the ball has almost gone under it. No spin, it's just skidded on. He was probably looking to hit it too hard.
