Pant had left many breathless with some of his shot-making yesterday, but sadly his stay was brief this morning as an inside edge at Stuart Broad crashed into the stumps in the fifth over. What does Stuart say to him? perhaps it is best if we don't know.

India resumed on 307-6 and were hopeful of posting an imposing total with Rishabh Pant and Ravi Ashwin at the crease.

Afternoon all, we'll have some of the more unusual law queries answered by umpire John Holder during the lunch interval but let's first recap on what has been a fine morning for England.

Well I started the day by saying England had work to do and so far things have gone well for Joe Root's side. They polished off India's innings and have been a good start with bat in hand. Conditions aren't going to get any easier this afternoon though. The cloud is expected to stick around.

Here's Jamie Lillywhite to take you through lunch and beyond.

It's an absolute win for England in this session. Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson cleaned up the tail beautifully with no real damage to the score and then the openers have got off to a flier.

    Cook 21, Jennings 20

Cook does the decent thing and takes five of the six balls in the final over from Bumrah. The runs continue to flow for England when Cook clips three off his pads through mid-wicket.

The crowd applaud when Jennings pulls away the bat and leaves the final ball of the session. India didn't quite take advantage of those 40 minutes and England will be very, very happy to get to lunch with 10 wickets in hand.

On the subject of unusual stoppages in village cricket, Great Chishill v Isleham in the Cambridgeshire Leagues saw play temporarily suspended due to a stray dreadlock on the wicket. The stocky Kiwi blacksmith had only had the dreads stitched in days before the game and his energetic bowling action was just too much for one of these chunky locks of leftover hair from the barbershop floor. Safe to say, this was a first for all involved.

    Cook 16, Jennings 20

Jennings has plenty of company - two slips and a short leg - there's no spin for Ashwin and the opener survives.

There'll be one more over before lunch and Bumrah will bowl it.

I don't think India have quite got it right, they are probably striving too much to get a wicket before lunch. It's very easy to do when you have seen Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad swing it around corners.

I thought this might happen. Ravichandran Ashwin is introduced into the attack in just the eighth over with two left-handers at the crease.

There are screams of catch straight away.

Virat Kohli is a real live-wire. He's jumping up and down and then putting his hands on his head after thinking Shami had almost sneaked one through Jennings' defences. England don't look at ease but they are rattling along. Another controlled shot down through gully from Jennings goes for four. The run-rate is currently 5.42.

Both Cook and Jennings look very comfortable on the back foot, they're both tall men. They don't move their feet a long distance so your length has to be fuller to try and trap them on the crease, but England will be delighted with this.

England haven't faced anyone as quick as Bumrah yet in this series. The seamer perhaps gets a little exuberant and bowls the first no ball of the match. There's no chanting from the crowd at the moment. They seem to be gripped by this action with England under pressure.

Shot! That should settle Cook down a little. Bumrah over-pitches and the England opener calmly drives through mid-off for four.

This won't please Virat Kohli. The ball is hooping around but in this over Mohammed Shami serves up gifts to both Cook and Jennings. Both men clobber the half-trackers through the off side. The openers have 15 minutes more to battle through before they head for the sanctuary of the dressing room for lunch.
