India have bowled a lot better since lunch. Their line has been very good and their length has been immaculate.

  2. Eng 75-2published at 19 overs

    Root 11, Pope 10

A fortuitous four for Root. The slips fielders are packed in like sardines but the edge to a good one from Bumrah finds its way low between the wicketkeeper, who was beginning to move in the opposite direction, and first slip. Dangerous movement away from the bat and challenging times for the England batsmen.

Dave Amitri: Surely it's time to give Jason Roy a go in the Test side. In the absence of anyone else. A great cricketer is a great cricketer regardless of ball colour.

Root gets off the mark from his 13th delivery with a nonchalant hook to the boundary, before punching Ishant with authority off the back foot to collect three more, Pandya gouging out a huge scoop of soft Nottingham turf as he slides in to haul the ball back.

Rob Meech: Ollie Pope’s bat looks older than him.

  6. Eng 64-2published at 17 overs

    Root 0, Pope 10

Skies lifting a little as Bumrah scurries in again. It's a day for the seamers but India spinner R Ashwin (as his nearest and dearest might call him) is off the field at present. Bumrah cuts one back sharply to Pope and it squeezes between bat and pad, only just above the stumps.

Nick Conway: Another failure from the openers. Jennings' technique is all over the place and Cook just hasn't looked right for a long time. He will probably make 200 not out in a dead rubber at the end of the series though so everyone can say he has still got it.

Mark Treagust: Jennings experiment has to end now, time and time again he loses his wicket cheaply. Bring in Burns, his first-class average is higher than all who have failed before him, give him a fair run before the Ashes next summer.

  8. Eng 64-2published at 16 overs

    Root 0, Pope 10

Ishant is getting some elaborate in-swing and he traps Root on the crease but they decide against a review and they are right to do so, the replay shows it would have comfortably missed the leg pole.

The exuberance of youth draws support from the crowd. Whereas Keaton Jennings was called "rubbish" (actually, something stronger than that) as he walked off, Ollie Pope garnered instant encouragement. "Come on, lad," said the old fella in front of me. Pope's cover drive for four got one of the biggest cheers of the day.

Bumrah is up around 87mph with that quirky action of his and he tries a short one which Pope calmly helps down to deep square-leg to collect two more and reach double figures, with his captain still not off the mark

Rich Kisbee: All change up top then... I’m not convinced Jennings ever looked comfortable

Francis Edwards: Openers have come and gone since Strauss retired. But sorry, Cook you’ve been wonderful but now is your turn I’m afraid. It’s time for a new opener, maybe two to get some games especially in time for the Ashes.

Small Man Peaky: Once again such poor batting from England’s openers. Do so well to make it to lunch then get out to the second and third good balls that the Indian quicks bowl. This happens so often with so many different partners for Cook I think it may have to do with the coaching...

This is going to be entertaining because by the looks of it Ollie Pope is going to play a few shots.

This has got the feel of a tremendous Test match.

A stylish shot again from Pope against Ishant, the high front elbow and it races through mid-off for three more. A positive response from the 20-year-old following those two wickets in two balls.

Ishant Sharma has now dismissed Alastair Cook 10 times in Test cricket. That is the second most in his career. Morne Morkel got him 10 times.

So we began the afternoon with two left-handers and very quickly there are two right-handers as young Ollie Pope joins captain Root at the crease, with all manner of excitable chatter from the India fielders and the floodlights on beneath a dark bank of cloud. Four slips await but Pope gets off the mark by driving Bumrah gloriously to the cover boundary.

Cook got a good ball. He will have been walking off thinking he could have left that but the angle made it hard for him. Ishant is a good bowler to left-handers. Cook actually looked good at the crease, he's looked alright in terms of his movement, but that was a good ball. If you're being ultra critical, he could have left it on length.

That is a real issue for Keaton Jennings. He is getting so squared up on the back foot. As soon as the ball seams or bounces he is going to be in all sorts of problems. That is a ball he should be leaving.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.1 overs

    Jennings c Pant b Bumrah 20 (Eng 54-2)

Two in two balls and there is a stunned silence around the crowd. Not a great deal of foot movement and the tentative prod is gleefully snaffled again by wicketkeeper Pant.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12 overs

    Cook c Pant b Ishant 29 (Eng 54-1)

Didn't cost them anything though, another good ball, another edge and this time it's a softer one to give the wicketkeeper a routine catch.

The keeper goes quite late so Pujara would have seen that ball all the way. You'd expect first slip at this level to take that one.
