When I toured with England we had one physio, Bernard Thomas, who was a former PE teacher, and we did the same warm-up - 100 days with the same one every day.

  2. Ind 323-6published at 91 overs

    Pant 24, Ashwin 12

Jimmy Anderson is grumpily adjusting his fielders after a streaky shot from Ashwin goes between gully and point down to the third-man boundary. Anderson gets the ball tossed back to him and isn't happy. I think it must have ended in a puddle from the morning rain. Anderson rubs it furiously on his trousers.

This won't help Anderson's mood either. Another edge bounces before the slips and goes for four.

These are important runs for India.

The ball has swung after passing the bat a few times which makes life more difficult for wicketkeepers. It's not easy with the bowlers round the wicket to a left-hander, you are bound to be unsighted and it's quite an angle. You could hear the ball thud into his gloves at a good pace.

  4. Ind 315-6published at 90 overs

    Pant 24, Ashwin 4

We haven't seen anything aggressive from Rishabh Pant yet after the big build-up I've given him. Typical.

Stuart Broad doesn't quite get his line right in this over from round the wicket to the left-hander. The sold-out crowd hums in approval as Jonny Bairstow dives well down the leg side to take a one-handed catch and prevent four byes.

Prayags: Talking about pre-match warm up, I remember the day at a Test in Ahmedabad when Pakistan were touring under the great Imran Khan. Pakistan's players were practising catching when the ball hit a kid watching near the boundary.

Before anybody could react, one Pakistan player jumped the fence in a flash and carried the kid in his arm and raced towards the dressing room. A few minutes later the kid appeared walking with his head bandaged but with a big smile as he was carrying a bat and other goodies.

I am sure - just like me - some other kids would not have minded an injury that day.

  6. Ind 313-6published at 89 overs

Jimmy Anderson is setting Rishabh Pant up here. This will be one of the biggest tests the youngster has played in his career. Anderson pushes the ball across the left-hander again and again. The big inswinger doesn't come yet. Pant takes a single to keep the strike.

It did swing for me here but I always bowled very badly. I was up against people like Hadlee and Rice who knew what to do on this pitch. Hadlee bowled that beautiful length.

James Anderson, of course, opens up from the other end.

This ball is just eight overs old remember. It should swing in these conditions.

He certainly didn't see it, we saw that happen with Stokes yesterday. He literally did not see that clearly and his instincts had him ducking, which won't have pleased Stuart Broad. Even if he had see it it might have been too high.

The umpires are already on their walkie talkies. I think they are asking for the floodlights to be turned on. That tells you that it's a little gloomy in Nottingham.

Wow. Maybe the light has cost England a wicket here. Ashwin edges but Jos Buttler doesn't pick the ball up at all. He makes no attempt to go for the catch and ducks to protect himself.

It was probably catchable but would have needed Buttler to take the ball above his head. We can't call it a drop but a missed chance.

This ball is just wobbling a little. It looks like it wants to swing in these overcast conditions. Broad's pace is up at 87mph early.

Pant gets an early single. Ravichandran Ashwin will face his first ball next.

Pant has played four shots in preparation - none of them defensive.

  13. Ind 307-6published at 87 overs

    Pant 22, Ashwin 0

Rishabh Pant is scratching away at the crease, marking his guard. He looks a confident man.

James Anderson bowled the final over last night so Stuart Broad will start this morning.

    Here we go.

If James Anderson was to design conditions to bowl in then they would be this.

A thickly bearded Chris Broad enters the TMS box: "It's the only thing I am better at than Stuart these days - his beard is awful. Mine might have a bit of grey in it but it's better."

  17. 'No hero's welcome for Stokes'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

It was a quiet day for Ben Stokes yesterday on his return to the team.

He bowled 15 overs, conceded 54 runs and took no wickets. He did take a good catch to help dismissed Virat Kohli.

Our man at Trent Bridge Stephan Shemilt was in amongst the crowd for much of the day yesterday to assess the reception Stokes received.

It is one of those grounds where you can get all conditions and it helps everyone. I played here when Middlesex got skittled out by Hadlee and co but then we batted in the second innings when it had flattened out and got 400 and then Emburey and Edmonds bowled them out and won the game for us.

I'm looking forward to Pant again, I thought this could be an 'I was there moment' when he hit that six yesterday, it just felt as if this could be start of a very significant career.
