At least there was no calamity and they will come back to fight another day. I think it's really important they don't subside tomorrow and they can take it to a fifth day.

  2. Close of play - Eng 23-0published at 18:31 British Summer Time 20 August 2018

And breathe. Cook and Jennings have got to the close. England's former captain turns around and walks straight off.

  3. Eng 23-0published at 8.5 overs

Cook is surrounded. Root watches on nervously.

Cook blocks. Kohli claps. The crowd cheers.

  4. Eng 23-0published at 8.4 overs

Kohli is making Cook wait. He calls for another helmet for the final two deliveries. He wants to get another catcher in.

  5. Eng 23-0published at 8.3 overs

Yelps of excitement from the slips but Cook sees off the first three balls. Ashwin is puffing his cheeks out in pain in his delivery stride. It's a hip issue he has.

  6. Eng 23-0published at 8 overs

    Jennings survives.

Ravichandran Ashwin will bowl the final over...

Tom: If England are to do the seemingly impossible here it's imperative that Cook and/or Jennings step up with a serious score (if it isn't Jennings he has no hope of playing in Southampton)

  8. Eng 23-0published at 7.5 overs

Almost. Ishant beats Jennings again. The England opener nibbled at it too. Ishant brushes his sweaty fridge out of his face again. Kohli comes in for another chirp.

Matthew Broad: 250 runs a day? 1.39 per over is realistic. Nothing silly, fellas.

  10. Eng 23-0published at 7.2 overs

    Geoff believes.

Kohli is still desperate for a wicket tonight. He is still shouting away and applauding his bowlers. He's like a man possessed.

No-one thought 400 was possible in one-day cricket until we did it four times this year.

    Two overs remaining

Cook has company in the form of a slip, a gully and a short leg with Ashwin bowling. They all leap in the air when the spin takes the ball past the opener's edge.

Ashwin is hopping around too. At first I thought it was in disappointment but on the replays it looks like it's because of that injury that kept him off the field in the first innings.

That could be a big boost to England.

Definitely the right move to bowl Ashwin, who has dismissed Cook twice in this series with absolute pearlers, I'm sure the India fielders will keep reminding Alastair Cook of that.

  15. Eng 20-0published at 6 overs

    Three overs remaining

Ishant wastes the end of the over. Jennings can leave comfortably.

It's going to be time for Ashwin. Someone play the Jaws music.

    Cook on strike...

Ben Dunckley: Get the feeling that if Jennings wants to play the fourth Test he needs to still be at the crease by tea tomorrow.

  17. Eng 20-0published at 5.3 overs

India could have had two or three wickets now. Keaton Jennings is smiling but he knows he's got away with one. It's another beauty from Ishant, almost unplayable. Is this the same pitch?!

  18. Eng 20-0published at 5 overs

    Cook 7, Jennings 13

The crowd are trying to get behind England. They roar a clip from Cook to the boundary. Bumrah's pace is up at around 90mph but he can't find a way through. He is swishing his cap in frustration after taking it from the umpire.

I wonder if Hardik Pandya will get a couple of overs from this end. I'd be very tempted if I was Virat Kohli.

  20. Eng 16-0published at 4.2 overs

How has this delivery not got Cook out? It pitches on off and then nips away, beats the edges and misses the stump by a matter of millimetres.

Kohli is buzzing around. He's chirping in the slips.

    Proper theatre.
