Wonder if England could use the innings they didn't need at Lord's here instead?

Rishabh Pant is an excitable young man. He's tosses the ball up in the air and gasping when Jennings leaves the ball outside off stump.

Joe Root is watching on. Will he come out if a wicket falls or will England use a nightwatchman?

    20 minutes to go.

I think there is a discernible lack of pace in the pitch. It will juice up in the morning after a roll but it's a good time to bat, if not a good light.

Ishant is coming round the wicket to Cook, looking for a similar delivery to the one below. I've been very impressed with Ishant in this series. He's surprised me with how good he has been.

Cook gets off the mark with a nudge.

A good confident start from Keaton Jennings. Alastair Cook against Ishant Sharma is a game within a game. He had him at Lord's and again here. I wonder if batsmen are as aware of this as bowlers are.

  6. Eng 13-0published at 3 overs

Four more to Jennings! This one is a little edgy but down and bounces just off the edge of the pitch and goes to third man.

Bumrah goes full and straight to end the over and I must admit I think my heart skipped a beat. Jennings gets his bat down on it.

This is one of the regular burdens of being an opening batsman. They cope with it better than numbers three or four, who probably think it terrible to go out so late in the day. There will be a nightwatchman if a wicket goes and I think it will be a case of 'Adil, don't have a shower, get some pads on.'

I say there's half an hour left but if England lose seven wickets by half past then we could play the extra half hour. Not meaning to sound too negative.

Jennings might not have got the defensive batting memo. He drives for four and has nine from eight balls.

Ishant Sharma is quite reminiscent of Stuart Broad, although his record is not as good. He is a very tall man and he likes going round the wicket.

Play that! This ball is fizzing off the surface which has looked dead all day. That's what pressure does. Ishant has five men waiting for the catch in the slips. Luckily for Jennings he doesn't edge this one. There are a few extra yards in Ishant's follow-through. India want this.

Two overs down. Half an hour of play left.

Hopefully Jennings is not thinking too much but it's hard to get out of that 'what if I get out now?' phase.

Keaton Jennings is on strike to Ishant Sharma now. His Test match hasn't been the best so far...

Blimey. Cook has done well not to edge that ripper from Bumrah. The England opener is hopping on his toes and gropes for the ball. Rishabh Pant tosses the ball in the air in frustration.

Kohli jogs past the two batsmen shouting something at the end of the over. It might have been encouragement to his bowlers but he made sure Cook and Jennings heard it.

    One over survived.

Couldn't help noticing some scores in the county round-up, James Vince a hundred, Moeen Ali 98 not out. I'm sure Moeen will be in the squad again for Southampton.

India are chomping at the bit. They sprint away from their huddle. The floodlights are on. Good luck Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings. They're going to need it.
