Steady progress again from India in that session, adding 76 for the loss of just that Pujara wicket. We've had 307 runs in both of the first two days but only 146 so far today. So will we see 161 in the final session?

    Ind 270-3 (Kohli 93, Rahane 17, lead by 438)

Rashid had Kohli caught at slip in the 90s in the first innings of course but the captain will not be distracted and he will resume in 20 minutes or so still needing seven to reach three figures.

I think there will be six tempters here.

The sun breaks through as Broad continues. An eager member of the groundstaff rushes out to the centre with a grey sack over his shoulder, but the umpires wave him away. Time for one more over before the tea interval and Kohli seven from his century.

Kohli is hungry for this hundred now. He missed out in the first innings but will not miss out again.

All manner of headgear at a Test venue and there appears to be two mature gentlemen together in matching leather cowboy hats, which is a nice variant on the baseball cap or the panama. The whole crowd shows their appreciation of a Kohli clip through mid-wicket at Anderson, taking the captain into the 90's and prompting England's opening bowler to kick angrily at the turf. The large mallet is wielded beyond, ready for action, but not called for.

  7. Ind 264-3published at 86 overs

    432 ahead

Exquisite timing from Rahane, a minimum of movement but just a wristy flick behind square for his second boundary, delighting a section of India supporters who proudly unfurl the tricolour flag.

Jim Brown: As good as Bell's record was and as pleasing on the eye his batting was, he certainly fell into the 'flakey' camp and loved getting involved in a collapse !

Anderson ruefully ruffles the blond tips in his quiffed dark hair, wondering quite why he has not dismissed Kohli in this series.

Julian Barrell: Ian Bell's Test average is 42. All other top-order batsmen who have debuted since he was dropped average less than 30. Just saying.

There is some excitable, high-pitched squealing from somewhere in the crowd. I learned today the word hogget, which is the short stage between lamb and mutton. Broad raps Rahane on the glove with some impressive lift. The England batsmen might not want to have seen that.

With the fact this new ball is swinging, I wonder what is going through the minds of the England batsmen right now.

Kohli has been in for 161 deliveries but he still cannot do anything about a beautiful away swinger from Anderson, which beats everything as it thumps into Buttler's gloves. A reminder Bairstow has suffered a fracture of his left middle finger and must be rated doubtful for the remainder of the series, although the word is he is going to be pushed out to bat in the second innings.

Undoubtedly the likes of Clarke and Gubbins are the future for England but whoever comes in now is only a stop gap until Bairstow returns. Not good for the confidence of the young lads to drop them after two games! Why not pick Ali or even ring that Bell?

Jimmy has turned his attentions to the imposing figure of umpire Erasmus now, but his protestations appear to have been met with a similarly dead bat. Broad takes up the attack and has three slips to Rahane, who he has dismissed on six occasions, but the India batsman offers Erasmus-like defiance.

Just to add to the Ian Bell debate, if he's in good form then why not pick him and maybe give some of these great youngsters another year to develop away from the intense pressure of the international arena?

Anderson was highly unfortunate not to get a wicket this morning in conceding only seven runs in seven overs. There is a hint of away swing but Jimmy is still remonstrating with umpire Gaffaney and we think it is not the ball they selected.

We are indeed going to see the new ball but Jimmy Anderson is not happy with it. It's a beautiful dark red, but for some reason it causes consternation for England's record wicket-taker before he has bowled a ball with it.

Kohli will know in his mind already what he wants to do. He will either bat all day or give England 15 overs tonight.
