Short again from Rashid and Pujara has ample time to rock back and hammer it past startled 20-year-old Ollie Pope under the helmet at short-leg for his ninth boundary.

I think India will give themselves a dozen overs so of bowling tonight. Then all four new ball bowlers can have a go and Ravichandran Ashwin can have a couple overs. They will look for a lead of 480 or 500.

There is nothing in the pitch and England haven't helped themselves by dropping Pujara.

  3. Ind 218-2published at 70 overs

    Pujara 68, Kohli 66

A textbook on-drive from the India captain heads for the boundary but evergreen Jimmy Anderson races after it and hauls it in, restricting the scoring to three. Is Jimmy going to take the new ball in 10 overs from now?

That is the hundred partnership. It has come from 270 balls with eight fours and is the sixth between these two in Test cricket.

  5. Ind 214-2published at 69 overs

    382 ahead

The hundred partnership is respectfully applauded by the Trent Bridge crowd and the batsmen meet in the centre of the pitch for a business-like handshake. Pujara looking in complete command against Rashid and he steps down the track to flick the spinner for a single to deep mid-wicket from the final ball of the over.

I don't think any of them looked convinced.

  7. Ind 210-2published at 68 overs

    Pujara 65, Kohli 61

Woakes squeezes one between Pujara's bat and pad. Captain Root looks around for guidance, with one review remaining, but there is little support from his colleagues and just as well, replays show no contact with the bat - and it was heading over the stumps in case there were optimistic thoughts of an lbw.

MC: Bairstow is sat with his finger in a pint of water on the balcony. It's hardly cutting-edge medical care!

  9. Ind 210-2published at 67 overs

Ben Stokes in his cap at slip is the only fielder close to the bat as Rashid continues. We'd had about six wickets by now in the afternoon session yesterday hadn't we? still waiting for our first of the day.

That could be the end of Jonny Bairstow's series. Generally a broken finger is four to six weeks.

He probably knows he is going to be out so if he can cope with the pain he may as well go and bat. I am not sure if he will go in at five.

  11. Ind 209-2published at 66 overs

    Pujara 64, Kohli 61

Jonny certainly cuts a disconsolate figure and he's had enough of watching from the balcony. Cloud still thickening at Trent Bridge but no heavy rain yet. The end of Woakes' 15th over and he's finding a good rhythm in the early 80's-mph.

News on Jonny Bairstow and it's not good, there is indeed a small fracture to that left middle finger of his. He is likely to bat in the second innings apparently.

  13. Ind 207-2published at 65 overs

    375 ahead

Rashid has been hit for four boundaries in this innings but just a couple of singles result from this one, extending the partnership to 96.

Regarding Ian Bell, why not bring back someone at the age of 36? Pick your best players, regardless of age. Chris Rogers had three more years from the age of 35 for Australia and scored lots of runs.

  15. Ind 205-2published at 64 overs

    Pujara 63, Kohli 58

I can't imagine Merv partaking of the corporate Prosecco can you? Kohli is well outside his crease again as Woakes continues. The captain looks so focused and he scurries through for a quick single. A few drops of rain in the air but I don't think it is going to take the players off and the bronzed figure of umpire Erasmus displays a jovial disposition.

Merv Hughes is here! We usually see Merv leading tour groups during Ashes series, but today he looks to be here solely for pleasure, enjoying a tipple.

  17. Ind 203-2published at 63 overs

    371 ahead

Clouds darkening at Trent Bridge and the forecast says there is a small chance of rain this afternoon. The floodlights come on and Pujara's eyes light up also at a rank long hop from Rashid that is mercilessly dispatched to the mid-wicket fence to bring up the 200.

Ruth Brooksbank: As much as I think Ian Bell is a class batsmen, bringing him back into the England team would be a backwards step. We need to look at bringing in some younger players with a longer 'shelf life'.

  19. Ind 198-2published at 62 overs

    Pujara 58, Kohli 56

Chris Woakes looks in good spirits as he trundles in with two slips and a gully waiting perhaps more in hope than expectation. Bairstow watching on from the balcony, he hasn't got the frozen peas out, his afflicted middle finger is dipped in a pint of frozen water. I'm going to leave that there.

It is now at the stage where it is just a matter of how long will India bat?

I would bat until a lead of 500, pull out and give England 15 overs to bat tonight. I would certainly want a bowl at England tonight.

The clouds are coming in a bit. Why wouldn't you want to make Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings bat?
