  1. Ind 254-3published at 80 overs

    422 ahead

Captain Root, after his two overs for five before lunch, rattles through a quick over from round the wicket and Rahane places an over-pitched one perfectly through mid-wicket for his first boundary. Now are we going to see the new ball as the skies lift a little?

This series is the first time Adil Rashid has bowled as England's solitary spinner. That's a different role in itself. He's bowled OK - it's not an ideal situation for him because he has not runs to play with.

  3. Ind 250-3published at 79 overs

    Kohli 81, Rahane 9

Rashid spins one away from Kohli and it is taken at first slip. The only problem for England is that there was no contact with the bat. The lead now 418, the highest fourth innings score made to win a Test.

  4. Ind 249-3published at 78 overs

    417 ahead

Stokes is sweating up in the humidity of the afternoon, looking more and more like Mike Love in concert with the Beach Boys in the late sixties. Stylishly driven through the covers by Kohli, the captain's seventh boundary, and he moves into the 80's.

Cricket's ridiculousness in one picture. Every player and official currently involved in the action watching a chap whack the ground with a massive mallet...

  6. Ind 243-3published at 77 overs

    Kohli 76, Rahane 7

The majority of the drinks break has been spent by the players watching a member of the groundstaff hammering at the crease with a huge square-headed mallet, reminiscent of a competitor in the Highland Games.

The lead now over 400 - and as we all know, only four teams have made more than 400 to win a Test match. Rashid tries from round the wicket to Kohli but it's short again and Kohli goes back and stands tall to whip through mid-wicket for his sixth boundary.

If Kohli gets his 30 runs for his hundred by tea time then after that he will throw his bat at everything.

  8. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 76 overs

    Ind 236-3 (404 ahead)

A rather surreal atmosphere under the dark, humid skies. The crowd are hushed, as if waiting for a declaration and the next phase of the game, and a wailing siren adds to the solemn scene. Stokes, who was shown on a graphic to have bowled more bouncers than his teammates combined, charges in again full of intent, but Kohli calmly clips him away for a single to keep the strike. Time for drinks.

I'm in the Fox Road Stand. One chap is doing some excellent encouragement of the England team. "Great world-class basics from you, Woakesy!" "You're looking well, Keaton!"

  10. Ind 230-3published at 75 overs

    Kohli 70, Rahane 4

We're not used to seeing Alastair Cook out in the wild open expanse at deep square-leg, it might remind him of being back on the farm. He slides across the damp Nottinghamshire turf to haul in from Rahane, but not before the batsman has taken two more from Rashid.

I don't think the Indian players will be too bothered with the light rain if it livens the pitch up.

  12. Ind 226-3published at 74 overs

    394 ahead

The slow motion cameras show rain falling quite steadily but there is no suggestion of any interruption to play. Stokes continues with three slips, but the combative all-rounder cannot trouble the batsmen.

  14. Ind 225-3published at 73 overs

    Kohli 68, Rahane 1

Rashid didn't bowl at all at Lord's but his 17th over produces his first maiden, Rahane respectfully playing identical forward defensive strokes to each delivery. Umbrellas going up and an array of thicker layers in varying hues.

There have been questions about Pujara's place in this team. He was well-set and the ball didn't do much, maybe moved a little bit away. It has been a very good partnership. Pujara didn't do a lot wrong. This game has got three of India's batsmen back in form.

  16. Ind 225-3published at 72 overs

    393 ahead

Rahane the new batsman and the light for him is not very inviting, some huge dark clouds around and the floolights shining brightly. A lone cameraman at the top of a crane is earning his corn. The crowd applaud a successful over from Stokes, with Rahane clipping a single to get off the mark.

That looked to be an innocuous delivery. After what seems like an eternity England have a wicket. That is a long, long time coming.

    Pujara c Cook b Stokes 72 (Ind 224-3)

The first wicket of the day, and disbelief from all concerned. Pujara with a prod at the returning Stokes and the edge flying at comfortable height to first slip where Cook thankfully takes it with little alarm.

Calum Trenaman: This Bairstow injury could be a blessing in disguise for the long-term health of the team. In his absence, I’d like to see Joe Clarke tried at four with Pope at five. Or try Rory Burns as opener and push everyone else down one spot in the order.
