During the drinks break, Joe Root appeared to be having quite an animated chat with a few of his bowlers. He, Broad and Anderson stood together for a couple of extra sessions, presumably having a brief tactics chat, while Stokes went to the top of his mark. There's not a lot - or any - threat in this pitch, but England have let this game drift.

Still Ben Stokes after drinks. His red beard makes him look like Vincent van Gogh. England would lop off an ear for a wicket here. It's nice from Stokes, in KL Rahul's channel, but the pace has dropped to around the 80mph mark. Rahul plays off the back foot, high elbow. We may need a digger to remove him.

The players are taking drinks. Trevor Bayliss has run on the field with a flipchart and some name badges for Anderson, Broad and Curran.

If that had been off Anderson's bowling, he wouldn't have been very happy with that.

Still Root. Pigeons scatter as Pant skews a drive that goes behind point. Root has his head in his hands again. Take that! Pant bullets one through the covers, through fielder James Anderson, for four more. Is there any chance of Anderson ever bowling again in Test cricket? What about Alastair Cook?

Pant has got a lot of promise. A lot to do with his keeping, but he's a pugnacious little fella.

Well batted, sir. Rishabh Pant goes to his maiden Test half-century by cutting Ben Stokes for a single. He gets a big hug from KL Rahul and warm applause from the The Oval crowd. You get the feeling that his batting could make him a star in this India team. He may yet save them this Test.

Prayags: We have a tradition here in our office in India to treat guys to samosas. I was to treat this time if India won the series, then I changed it to India losing 2-3, then 1-3 with a draw. Now I have decided if India survive until tea then it would be good enough reason for a treat...

Right, what on earth is going on out there? England only need five wickets to win this Test. They have their two greatest wicket-takers out there (admittedly, one has a cracked rib), yet neither are bowling. Neither are their frontline spinners. Fielders are scattered to all parts of south London. Help me out...

Ben Stokes is testing the patience of Rishabh Pant, hanging the ball outside the off stump. In the crowd, patrons battle to stay awake. Pant isn't having any of it and takes a single to near a maiden Test fifty. Have a look at some highlights. In the second clip, marvel at the outfit of the chap in the orange top.

Chris Corney: If i was a selector, I'd keep Matt Parkinson in mind. Granted he plays white ball, but given his age, the skill and control of wrist spin we've seen this summer is far superior to Rashid's dross half trackers, the selection of youth has worked fairly well so far...

It's a good question. England have six bowlers and haven't sent down 60 overs yet. However, Joe Root is bowling. Jimmy Anderson has bowled nine overs. Stuart Broad 10. Sam Curran seven. This can't have been in the script?

Ben Stokes is at least bringing a touch of thunder. Decent pace, threatening the toes of Pant as an ambulance blares past the ground. Ed Smith, the national selector, watches on. That squad for Sri Lanka is only a couple of weeks away...

Joe Root is a part-time off-spinner and has three catchers round the bat, with fielders on the one.

Moeen Ali is the main spinner but had the field spread. I think that's down to Moeen rather than Root, he wants the cover.

Root is round the wicket with his offies. Slip, leg slip, short leg for Rahul. The wind whips through Root's shirt. Hello, is that his version of a doosra? A maiden, but no danger.
