Joe Root is a handy bowler. Generally things happen when he bowls.

If Pant bats all day, India will get them. I mean, he won't. But they might. Two fours of Stokes, one to third man, one sweetly clipped off the toes. Joe Root has his head in his hands. Pant has 46 off 58 balls.

Another hour of this and the scoreboard will be really ticking. But England will get a chance with India playing like this.

What are you, his brother? Mercifully, England have changed the bowling. Ben Stokes on for Adil Rashid.

Mason: Really harsh on the Pant not being able to keep wicket remark. First time in England and the ball doing all sorts. Most of the byes have not been his fault either. Poor lad.

Rishabh Pant could have been the first keeper to concede more byes in a series than score runs.

But he's now up to 80 runs compared to his 76 byes.

Pant is letting it all hang out, here. Lovely cover drive off Moeen, skimming the turf as it powers to the boundary. England are still heavy favourites to win this match, they only need one wicket to open the door and they will get a second new ball. However, at the moment, they look flat.

Is there a chance Adil Rashid could bowl himself out of the Sri Lanka tour here? This is a similar scenario to what England will face in Galle and Rashid had to beg for a bowl. Now he's sending down a bag of nails. Someone tell Jack Leach to get loose.

Rahul has currently scored 62% of India’s runs - hot on the heels of Bannerman's record of 67.34% from very first Test in 1877. Could we see the oldest record in Test Cricket broken?

There's a reasonable crowd inside The Oval, but it feels very much like the morning after the night before. As if we're all still shaking off the effects of a shandy too many. A bit dusty. The cricket is hungover, too. A bit like we're going through the motions.

Are England already bowling for the new ball? Even though it's 29 overs away?

Somerset are getting gubbed by Hampshire. I'm not sure if that means Surrey can win the Championship today. Will need to do some maths. Rashid, sweater covering his backside, loops down some leggies. It's gentle stuff. There's a contest out there, but only just.

England can't get into a 'something will happen' mode. They still need to work and bowl into the right areas.

The spinner have come out after lunch and not found their length.

I'm not against watching Rishabh Pant bat for an hour or two. It would certainly be entertaining. Short chap, hint of facial hair, bright orange grip on the bat. Open stance, everything done with a flourish. If he could keep wicket, he'd be a good cricketer.

Francis Edwards: Hopefully we can see a bit of the Pant I have seen in the IPL. Terrific talent, and were it not the fact that Kohli clings so much to Dhoni in the ODI side he would be a shoo-in for sure.

Andrew Samson should be in charge of more things that just being England's national selector. Get him on the Brexit negotiations.

Rishabh Pant - likes a shot or two. Rashid is sent over mid-off for a one-bounce four.

As you would expect from the finger spinner, Moeen has a better control of length. Mo and Rashid to play in the first Test in Sri Lanka? Jack Leach too? If not them, who? Quite sedate from England so far this afternoon. If you don't want to get out, you won't...
