  1. Eng 55-2published at 15 overs

    Target 229

Heather Knight joins Beaumont at the crease. The latter survives an lbw appeal as she tries to guide Klaas across the line, but umpire Steve O'Shaughnessy shakes his head. Reprieved, Beaumont straight-drives past the bowler and up the hill for four.

    Taylor b Khaka 5 (Eng 51-2)

Oh, dear, England - Sarah Taylor departs as she's bowled by Khaka. It looked like it took the inside edge, then her pad, and rebounded onto the stumps - but she's got to go. Huge wicket for the Proteas.

Tammy Beaumont was a high-level gymnast back in the day. She can do handstands, backflips and everything.

  5. Eng 51-1published at 13.5 overs

Beaumont dabs a single to third man, then has to go for the full-length dive as Taylor clips one to mid-wicket. She makes her ground in time - then turns to Taylor and a couple of choice words may have been exchanged about whether there was a run there...

  6. Eng 48-1published at 13 overs

Klaas meets class - when the Proteas seamer drifts onto middle and leg, Beaumont whips her through mid-wicket for four, then chopping a single to third man.

She has 17 from 33 balls - Taylor has four from five.

    Mel Jones
Former Australia batter on BBC Test Match Special

Taylor and Beaumont have had three 100-run partnerships - each time they've passed 50, they go on to pass 100.

They average 60 as a batting partnership since 2014 - the only higher average in that time is Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry, who average over 100 together.

  8. Eng 43-1published at 12 overs

    Target 229

The bad news for South Africa is that taking a wicket brings Sarah Taylor to the crease, and her first ball from Khaka is sumptuously on-driven for four!

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.1 overs

    Jones c Luus b Khaka 24 (Eng 39-1)

No spin needed - as it's seamer Ayabonga Khaka into the attack, and she did at Worcester, she takes a wicket with her first ball as Jones flicks an easy catch to Sune Luus at square leg.

Frustratingly, once against Jones has got a start - and got herself out when well set.

  10. Eng 39-0published at 11 overs

    Jones 24, Beaumont 12

Chnage of bowling - it's Masabata Klaas into the attack. She's a right-arm medium-pace seamer, and returning to international cricket after giving birth to her daughter. If you're asking why we haven't mentioned her so far... she came in for one ball at the end of the innings and was 0 not out without facing a ball as her partner was dismissedl

But when she offers Jones a bit of width, the Warwickshire right-hander smacks one through the covers for four. A helmet is summoned for keeper Lizelle Lee - so we're going to see some spin...

  11. Eng 34-0published at 10 overs

Kapp is giving it everything, but Beaumont on-drives her for two, before playing and missing at the last ball of the over.

And at this stage, South Africa were 22-1. Don't you dare count those chickens!

  12. Eng 32-0published at 9 overs

    Ismail 5-0-15-0

Jones shows Ismail a straight bat, and Dane van Niekerk leads by example with a great diving stop in the extra cover position normally occupied by her rival skipper Heather Knight.

The Canterbury crowd look to have thoroughly enjoyed their day out - and they're rewarded when a tight over ends with a half-tracker which Jones picks up well and wafts over deep backward square leg for a first-bounce four.

  13. Eng 28-0published at 8 overs

    Jones 15, Beaumont 10

More good line and length from Marizanne Kapp... she's out of luck as she finds Beaumont's outside edge, it would be a regulation first-slip catch but the solitary slip is standing wide (at about second or third slip) and it's out of reach of the diving keeper Lee - and away for four.

Shutting the slip cordon's stable door after the outside-edge horse has bolted, the slip is moved to a finer position and Beaumont adds a couple through the covers.

After a single from Beaumont, Jones is watchful against Ismail - though she swings across the line to the last ball, Ismail appeals for lbw but there's nothing doing.

We have mentioned before how Lizelle Lee doesn't stand up to the opening bowlers, allowing the batsmen to move around, which they can't do when Sarah Taylor is standing up to the stumps to the England bowlers.

Natalie Germanos asks: Are Ismail and Kapp not quicker than Shrubsole?

Sarah Taylor could stand up to both of them. Although Ismail's the quickest, I'd say Kapp's not much different to Brunt and Shrubsole.

  17. Eng 21-0published at 5 overs

    Kapp 3-0-11-0

Kapp gets some nice seam movement away from the right-handed Beaumont - who's beaten once again, and having criticised Lizelle Lee last over, it's only fair to mention she makes a good take from a ball swinging away to her left. Just a single from an excellent Kapp over.

  18. Eng 20-0published at 4 overs

    Jones 15, Beaumont 2

Beaumont has a wild swing but can't connect - the ball is called as a wide anyway, and a fumble by Lizelle Lee allows England to scamper an extra run. Jones, meanwhile, whips a four off her toes and it disappears to the mid-wicket boundary before you know it.

We have mentioned it before in this series - but having dropped regular keeper Trisha Chetty from the squad, South Africa have rather had to "make do" with Lee behind the stumps - and it's not a vast exaggeration to say it's probably cost them a couple of dozen runs across the three games.

  19. Eng 14-0published at 4 overs

Jones, bat aloft as Kapp runs in, moves into double figures with a two.

I wonder if strike rotation could be crucial to England's chances here. South Africa really dawdled after losing Lizelle Lee so early, in contrast to the way Beaumont and Sarah Taylor kept the Proteas working at Hove with some good running.

  20. Eng 12-0published at 3 overs

    Target 229

Steady from Beaumont and Jones against the pace of Ismail - remember, competition is fierce for the opening spots in this team, with Danni Wyatt down at six at the moment, and Lauren Winfield also in the squad.

    Two singles from the over.
