It was a soft start from South Africa, slow acceleration and then they collapsed in the last five overs. If the momentum was with South Africa up to the 45th over, it's definitely with England now.

The average 50-over score for the men's One-Day Cup on this ground is 274.

  2. wicket

Ismail st Taylor b Marsh 6 (SA 228 all out)

And the innings ends with a ball to spare as Ismail plays, misses and is smartly stumped by the irrepressible Sarah Taylor.

That's what I call a "team hat-trick" - three wickets in three balls, even though not all them were credited to the bowler (two were run-outs).

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.4 overs

    Khaka run out (Knight/Marsh) 0 - SA 228-9

Poor, poor cricket from South Africa - Ismail hits the ball straight to Knight at extra cover, never a run there but non-striker Ayabonga Khaka is halfway down the track and is run out, first ball, without facing. Knight even had time to drop the ball before returning it to Marsh.

Here's two of those wickets in quick succession, whicn both fell to Katherine Brunt:

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.3 overs

Du Preez run out (Brunt/Taylor) 17 (SA 228-8)

Du Preez knocks Marsh for a single, comes back for a second and is well short, despite the full-length dive, when Brunt's throw comes in and Sarah Taylor demolishes the stumps.

  6. Not outpublished at 49.2 overs

    SA 227-7

    ...but Ismail survives.

  7. Third umpirepublished at 49.2 overs

A quick single, Marsh takes the bails off, no dive from Ismail, they go upstairs...

I'm trying to work out if Katherine Brunt will be happy with that. She's gone for more runs than she'd like, but she's bowled at some tricky stages.

  9. SA 226-7published at 49 overs

    Brunt 10-1-52-3

Du Preez pokes a single to leg, Ismail chips a two over the bowler's head and is then hit by a throw to the bowler's end as she runs a quick single.

  10. SA 222-7published at 48.3 overs

Brunt to bowl her last over - and the first ball is a loose full toss which Du Preez pulls for four. A single brings the leftie Ismail on strike - the field changes. Ismail tips-and-runs a single into the off side. With nine balls left of the innings, South Africa are "Richie Benaud" for seven.

Here's the catch Amy Jones took to remove Chloe Tryon:

  12. SA 216-7published at 48 overs

    Marsh 8-0-41-1

Shabnim Ismail is the only left-hander on either side so Marsh, turning the ball away from her, goes round the wicket. A single gets Du Preez on strike, and gets SA off 212, having lost three wickets on that score. Du Preez hammers a two to wide long-on, while a single to deep square leg ensures she retains the strike.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 47.1 overs

    Kapp c & b Marsh 0 (SA 212-7)

Marizanne Kapp in at number eight for South Africa - and departs for a first-baller, giving Marsh a return catch.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 47 overs

    Luus c Sciver b Brunt 0 (SA 212-6)

A series to forget for Sune Luus - after scores of nought and two, she's demoted down the order to number seven, and after failing to get two dot balls away, she holes out to Nat Sciver on the cow corner fence.

I don't know how you can criticise the best wicketkeeper in the world - but she does sometimes miss the easier ones, it's quite a shock when she does.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 46.3 overs

Van Niekerk st Taylor b Brunt 95 (SA 211-5)

A great innings is ended by a great stumping - Brunt spears down a legside wide, and with a world-class wicketkeeper like Sarah Taylor up to the stumps, the bails are off in a nanosecond and Van Niekerk falls five runs short of a maiden ODI century.

  18. SA 206-4published at 46 overs

Van Niekerk 93, Du Preez 2

Good running from DVN and MDP allows them some ones and twos - nine from Marsh's over.

    Phil Long
    TMS statistician

South Africa have now recorded their three highest individual ODI innings against England, all in this series - the two innings from Lizelle Lee, and this one from Van Niekerk/

  20. SA 202-4published at 45.3 overs

Mignon du Preez is the new batter - and in an interesting move, off-spinner Laura Marsh is back into the attack. Former skipper Du Preez steers her second ball for a single - and current skipper Van Niekerk gives herself room for an idiosyncratic late cut through the covers for four. SA are past 200, and DVN is into the nineties.
