Positive start from England, maybe a hairy moment with that outside edge but the ball is coming on nicely. If they can get through the first few overs [of Ismail and Kapp], it's set up nicely.

  2. Eng 10-0published at 2 overs

    Jones 8, Beaumont 1

Marizanne Kapp, two shy of 100 ODI wickets, ties her hair in place and marks out her run-up at the Pavilion End - and her first ball is nicked past the keeper by Beaumont, that might have been a catch to an orthodox first or second slip... Jones makes South Africa pay with a cover-driven four, and remains strong on the leg side, helping herself to a double.

  3. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

    Target 229

Despite the need for early wickets, there's no slip in as Jones gets England away, threading an easy two between the square leg and mid-on fielders. A better over for Ismail, who bowled the first over up the hill at Hove and had to come off immediately.

Ready to go - Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont opening, with Shabnim Ismail bowling from the Nackington Road End - aka the Katherine Brunt End.

You don't want England to limp over the line, you want them to state their case.

South Africa probably need to bowl England out to win - if they don't take early wickets it's going to be difficult.

The floodlights are just coming on in Canterbury, though I'm not sure why - it's nearly the longest day of the year.

The innings ended with the last two of those three wickets off successive balls, as Khaka was run out without facing and Ismail was stumped.

That provoked a flurry of wickets as Luus and Kapp fell for ducks, and Mignon du Preez was one of three wickets to fall in the last over.

As the women's game continues to grow, it's good that we've got a series like that. A few years ago, when South Africa and Pakistan came here, they were easy victories for England, but there have been shifts in the balance of power.
