So from four became two, as Kent and Yorkshire move through to the One-Day Cup semi-finals.

Kent were dominant, putting Notts to the sword in imperious fashion. They play Worcestershire in their last four meeting on Sunday.

Essex and Yorkshire both had spells in the ascendancy, but it was the Vikings who eventually plundered a semis spot. Hampshire lie in wait for them on Sunday.

Gary Ballance, with a big 91, and Jack Leaning with 57, gave Yorkshire a platform on which to defend a lead of 259. There was also a creditable late stand by Tim Bresnan and Matthew Fisher who smashed useful 41 and 35 knocks with the bat.

Their bowlers turned up in reply, with skipper Steven Patterson turning in outstanding figures of 4-36 and eventual match-winner Fisher took 2-32.

Game over. Yorkshire will play Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in the semi-finals on Monday.

What drama.

Neil Wagner picks up a four, Tim Bresnan whizzed down a short ball and the Essex left-hander goes for a big chop. It thick edges up and away to the boundary. Unplanned but welcome.

Bresnan, who is yet to take a wicket, sees the ball clubbed away toward the boundary but a good field rules out the silver.

Essex, gulp, need 26 for the win from the final over. Wouldn't even fancy those chances playing Brian Lara Cricket on easy mode.

Ben Coad was hoiked for six off the first ball by Neil Wagner, a massive shovel into the flats surrounding the ground.

He changed tack, brought in the field, pitching stuff full and wide to the left-hander in a bid to frustrate.

Jamie Porter gets some straight stuff, being a right-hander.

Steven Patterson finishes his 10 overs with four wickets for 36.

Superb figures.

One run from that over and the target - 40 from 18 balls - is an ominous one for Essex.

Neil Wagner, the foil before, now becomes the man who shoulders this last stand for Essex.

At the other end, the scourge of Yorkshire with the ball - Jamie Porter - whipped one off the pads, under pressure. Single.

It's a tough ask this.

Steven Patterson was bowling some absolute peaches but one horrible, wide of off-stump full-toss looked like it was going to yield a boundary. Three for that ball.

Eek.

However, cometh the hour, cometh the man. Patterson squeaked through another sizzler, Adam Wheater shuffled across the stumps looking to crack it away and mistimed it. Stumps splattered. Bails down.

Hopes gone? The last pair will have to dig in for Essex now.

Adam Wheater reining in the natural inclination to wallop everything in sight, and to be fair Neil Wagner has made some smart choices too.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaang on a minute! Tim Bresnan went for the yorker, right in the mix and Adam Wheater just whizzed it flat like a missile out for six. Essex are running hot all of a sudden?!

Neil Wagner playing the perfect foil, Wheater playing this like a pinch hitter.

Yorkshire not the definitive winners we thought they were? This could be a thrilling finale.

Having tried to lap-sweep a shot on a free-hit that Neil Wagner got absolutely nowt on, he then follows that with a steaming beast of a six. Wow. Thumping.

Otherwise, only some hard-working fielding out on the boundary denies Essex, who are having a late dig here, from acquiring a couple of further boundaries.

Eight overs to go. 68 to win.

Adam Wheater lofts a corking six over the top, caught by a fine-bearded punter in the stands. Well done all round.

Deserved moment for Adam Wheater, who raises his bat to an appreciative crowd at Chelmsford after bringing up his 50.

Shame for him, and Essex, that no-one has been able to support him. He dropped down the order to accommodate Alastair Cook, and it was a move that hasn't paid off.

Fair play to Wheater, just went out and played his game.

Matthew Fisher, yet to pick up a wicket, keeps bowling straight and true and looking to get under the skin.

The nagging line-and-length just wavers with a wide ball...

However, he then steps up and sends one through to the big-blasting Matt Coles and he couldn't resist.

Ball smacks the stumps. Gone.

Neil Wagner might have followed... a rasper had Tim Bresnan leaping but he couldn't draw that ball in. Survival.

Matt Coles, and I hope he doesn't see this as an insult, looks a wee bit agricultural in his methods.

It's sometimes successful, such as a clumsy-looking reverse sweep that went for a four a moment ago.

He then tries to chug one to cow corner, but it's mopped up by the field.

Compare that to his partner at the other end, Adam Wheater - who seems to have all the shots but can't get on strike.

Matt Coles looks like he going to give the ball a muscular heave every time, it looks powerful but hasn't yielded much. He's on five.

Yorkshire doing well to restrict Adam Wheater's chances to have a dig, rotating the strike.
