  1. Close of play at Guildfordpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Surrey 459 v Somerset 180 & 18-0 (f/o)

And that's the end of a day which belonged to Surrey and Ryan Patel.

The 20-year-old seamer took 6-5 in 3.5 overs to skittle Somerset for 180.

Matt Renshaw and Ed Byrom did well to survive the final seven overs after they were asked to follow on, but it's an uphill task for the visitors over the next couple of days if they want to save the game.

  2. Division Two updatepublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

We've reached stumps at Swansea, Tunbridge Wells and Arundel and we're into the tea interval in our Division Two day-night match at Northampton.

Glamorgan had a good start to the day, adding 108 runs to their total after starting day two on 175-7, but they'll be looking over their shoulders now.

Alex Hughes (67 not out) and Billy Godleman (8 not out) will resume for Derbyshire just 76 behind.

Warwickshire have been buried under a mountain of runs by Kent after fine centuries by Sean Dickson and Joe Denly. Kent start day three with a healthy lead of 431, with Zak Crawley on 47 not out.

Durham will be relieved Will Smith has made it through to stumps unscathed at Arundel. He'll return to the crease tomorrow on 90 not out, with the visitors 350 behind Sussex on 202-4.

Gareth Roderick and Ryan Higgins continue the fightback for Gloucestershire against Northants at Northampton, but the visitors are still 73 behind on 147-5 at tea.

Meanwhile we're between innings at at Grace Road.

Middlesex have been dismissed for 233 by Leicestershire, 194 runs behind.

  3. Postpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Surrey 459 v Somerset 180 & 8-0 (f/o)

Few alarms for Somerset openers Matt Renshaw and Ed Byrom so far.

The pair have a couple of overs left to survive this evening, but it's very much been Surrey's and Ryan Patel's day.

  4. 'Essex batting showed its frailties'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Essex 206 v Notts 380 & 35-1 - stumps

    Glenn Speller
    BBC Essex sport

Nottinghamshire's day without a doubt as the Essex batting line-up again showed its frailties.

After the visitors clocked-up a fourth batting point, Essex only looked relatively secure when Ravi Bopara and Alastair Cook were together but when Cook departed, having been dropped earlier, the fall of wickets became all too familiar.

It's perhaps telling that the defending champions have only passed 300 twice this season in their first innings and three times overall.

Matt Carter bowled beautifully from the River End and Luke Fletcher was at his bustling best to give Notts a big advantage and every chance of forcing a win.

  5. Postpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Hampshire 138-3 v Yorkshire 350

Jimmy Adams and Tom Alsop are still going along swimmingly for Hampshire in the day-night game.

Adams is up to 75, Alsop has battled his way to 17 off 83 balls.

Jay Freeman will be taking over from me shortly to cover the final session from the Ageas Bowl, as well as the other pink-ball game at Northants.

  6. Stumps at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Essex 206 v Notts 380 & 35-1

A fine day for Nottinghamshire comes to a close at Essex.

After bowling out the county champions for 206, they decided not to enforce the follow-on and have now taken the lead past 200.

The loss of Chris Nash late on was only a minor blip.

  7. Division Two round-uppublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

Leicestershire are firmly in control at Grace Road, where Middlesex have slumped to 221-9 after losing three wickets in four balls. They're 206 behind.

Kent are six down now at Tunbridge Wells, but are still in a great position on 349-6, leading Warwickshire by 420 runs.

Derbyshire are closing the gap on Glamorgan at Swansea and are now 84 behind on 199-3.

Durham are 202-4 against Sussex at Arundel, 350 behind, with Will Smith on 90 not out.

Gloucestershire are 143-5 following on against Northants at Northampton, having been 72-5 at one stage. But they remain 77 behind.

  8. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Worcestershire 247 & 361-4 v Lancashire 130

    Daryl MitchellImage source, Rex Features

    And that's stumps at Worcestershire.

Brilliant centuries from Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell has put the hosts 478 ahead.

Lancashire were skittled for 130 in the morning session. A first win of the season is surely only a matter of time for Worcestershire.

  9. Postpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Surrey 459 v Somerset 180 & 0-0 (f/o)

Somerset openers Ed Byrom and Matt Renshaw will have seven overs to survive this evening after being made to follow on.

    Tough ask.

Chris Harden: Middlesex coming up woefully short again. Not even competing this year is disappointing and 1st innings runs been a problem for years. How this team won the championship two years ago I have no idea.

  11. No hat-trick for Zak Chappellpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Leicestershire 427 v Middlesex 213-9

But two in two isn't bad!

Dawid Malan defends the first ball of Chappell's 12th over.

Tim Murtagh is the last man, unbeaten on four at the other end.

Middlesex are really up against it now.

  12. Middlesex lose three wickets in four ballspublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Leicestershire 427 v Middlesex 213-9

The Middlesex innings is fading fast, as Zak Chappell pins James Harris and Steven Finn lbw with the fifth and sixth balls of his 11th over.

And there's another! Ravi Patel is bowled first ball by Gavin Griffiths.

    That's 213-9, still 214 behind.

Will Chappell get the chance to take a hat trick?

    Leach lbw b Patel 0 (Surrey 459 v Somerset 180)

Extraordinary. Ryan Patel finishes with figures of 6-5 (six wickets for five runs) off 3.5 overs.

The medium pacer traps Jack Leach lbw to finish Somerset's innings. Well bowled sir.

    Fell b Jones 62 (Worcs 247 & 354-4 v Lancs 130)

    Silly. Very silly.

Lancashire haven't been able to buy a wicket all day, but now they have three in six balls.

Tom Fell is bowled by Rob Jones to give him his maiden first-class wicket.

It all feels a little late in the day with Worcestershire leading by almost 500.

  15. Division Two round-uppublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

Glamorgan have a breakthrough at Swansea, where Jack Murphy has had Derbyshire's Wayne Madsen caught by Kiran Carlson off a mistimed pull for 41. But the visitors remain well placed on 189-3, 94 runs behind.

Kent are piling on the runs against Warwickshire at Tunbridge Wells and have moved to 335-6, a mammoth lead of 407.

Middlesex are in trouble against Leicestershire at Grace Road and are looking to Dawid Malan and Steven Finn to avoid the follow-on. The visitors have 212-7 and trail by 215. James Harris was the last man out, lbw to Zak Chappell for 5.

Will Smith is closing in on a century for Durham against Sussex at Arundel. He's 89 not out and the visitors have 201-4 still trailing by 351.

At Northampton, Gloucestershire have recovered to 124-5 after slumping to 72-5 against Northants this afternoon, but remain in deep strife with a deficit of 96.

    Barnard b Clark 1 (Worcs 247 & 354-3 v Lancs 130)

It matters little in the context of the game, but Ed Barnard is out.

The Worcestershire all-rounder is bowled by Jordan Clark to give the Lancashire seamer two wickets in the over.

Worcestershire lead by 471 with four overs left on day two.

A much needed boost for Essex.

Chris Nash tickles big paceman Matt Quinn behind and is on his way.

But the Nottinghamshire lead is still 195, and Essex are way behind the eight ball.

Having been on the field for every minute of the game so far, the Worcestershire opener is out stumped for a brilliant 163 to go with his first-innings 118.

The hosts lead by 469 at New Road.

  19. 50 for Fellpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Worcestershire 247 & 339-1 v Lancashire 130

It might only make a footnote when the story of this game is retold in years to come, but Tom Fell has reached a very nice half-century at New Road.

It's been a patient one for the Worcestershire number three - 113 balls and just three fours, but there is still so much time left in the match.

  20. Can Middlesex avoid the follow-on?published at 17:47 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    Leicestershire 427 v Middlesex 203-6

Plenty of pressure on Dawid Malan and James Harris now Hilton Cartwright and John Simpson have fallen in quick succession, to the bowling of Zak Chappell and Gavin Griffiths respectively.

Would Leicestershire enforce it, given the opportunity?
