Derbyshire made a solid start in reply to Kent's 561 all out on day two of their Division Two contest at Derby's County Ground.

Kent bowler Matt Henry:

"There's no doubt it's a really good wicket, and if we can stay patient and disciplined for a long period of time, we can get a result.

"We looked really like taking wickets towards the end, which is a good sign going into tomorrow.

"It's about playing the long game. It's probably not the most exciting cricket but we have to get the job done through boring people out, denying them runs and momentum. The wicket is getting low, so we have a good chance to get wickets."

This was the side's third home defeat in five games this year and the second in which they succumbed inside two days.

And despite being such a brilliant servant for so many years, captain Paul Collingwood is struggling with form this year.

This is what Durham coach Jon Lewis had to say about that:

"This game he probably played a little bit better than he has done recently but didn't make the significant contribution that we need from all of the batters.

The problem is within the second team there is probably not enough people putting enough good numbers on the board regularly to say - you should be picking me."

On Durham's struggles with the bat:

"Batting at home is a problem and in fairness in championship cricket throughout the year has not been great.

"If you are not a confident batting group and there is a little bit going on for the bowlers it becomes difficult, but we appear to be making it more difficult than it is."

On the Riverside pitch:

"130 all out twice in this game is not a fair reflection of the surface. It was a tough surface but if we had managed to set them 150 in the fourth innings we wouldn't have been far off. Across the match we are 100 runs short of where we needed to be."

That's officially it for day two at The Oval, and Notts will return tomorrow morning on 83-2 - needing a further 192 runs to make leaders Surrey bat again...

They're not done for the day yet but Surrey and Notts are being brought off for bad light at The Oval.

Notts are 83-2 - trailing by 191 runs - after being made to follow-on by leaders Surrey.

Kraigg Brathwaite (39*) and Samit Patel (4*) look set to return in the morning.

Away from the live action, Division Two side Derbyshire have just announced Dave Houghton will become their head of cricket from the end of the season.

Houghton is batting coach at Middlesex but will leave to have overall responsibility for all cricket management at Derbyshire.

Big turnaround for Gloucestershire - who have really dented Leicestershire's hopes of promotion by bundling them out so cheaply in just 54.2 overs.

Ryan Higgins set the hosts up with 4-26 in 15 overs and a very valuable 68 from Miles Hammond.

Captain Chris Dent makes it through to stumps on 61 not out.

After Kent piled on the runs this morning, Derbyshire looked untroubled by a previously potent Kent bowling line-up on day two.

The pitch is slow - so very slow - and batsman seem capable of driving, sweeping and pulling with ease.

Wayne Madsen and Alex Hughes will begin tomorrow, aiming first to avoid the follow in total, and then get closer to Kent’s mammoth 561.

There are fears this could descent into a high-score draw, but there’s a lot of cricket to play.

Surrey bring spinner Amar Virdi into the attack as they search for a breakthrough at The Oval.

Kraigg Brathwaite (36*) and Jake Libby (11*) look as settled as any Notts batsmen today, which isn't exactly saying much...

They're 69-1 and trailing the Division One leaders by 205 runs with a possible 10 overs left before close.

It was an afternoon of toil and strife for Somerset who tried everything to get rid of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Andrew Hodd, whose 6th wicket partnership for 173 is the highest of the match to date.

It fell to Josh Davey to raise the visitors’ spirits right at the end of the day, dismissing Tom Kohler-Cadmore for 81 before trapping Matthew Fisher in front for a duck in the final over.

Somerset remain on top overall, still 107 runs ahead and with just three more Yorkshire wickets still to get, but there will be some tired bodies tonight. An intriguing couple of days to come.

They're still a long way behind but Wayne Madsen has kept the hosts in touch with 60 not out, while Tom Lace and Billy Godleman chipped in with 40 and 71 respectively.

The deficit is 351.

Four matches standing in Division Two...

Derbyshire have recovered to 210-2 against Kent at Derby, but remain 351 behind at stumps.

Ivan Thomas dismissed both openers, but Wayne Madsen remains on 60 not out.

Middlesex ended day two on 210-5 against Sussex at Lord's - a lead of 208. Dawid Malan reaches stumps on 69 not out.

Leicestershire have taken a wicket at Bristol, but Gloucestershire remain well placed on 148-1 with a lead of 239. Chris Dent is 57 not out.

Warwickshire have racked up maximum batting points at Colwyn Bay, where they're 434-6 against Glamorgan. Ian Bell is 203 not out and the Bears lead by 231.

Still going at The Oval, where there are 15 more overs to be bowled tonight - whether we manage that or not is another matter.

Kraigg Brathwaite has moved onto 31 for Notts with his fourth boundary, with Jake Libby with him on 10 as Notts are on 64-1.

They're still 209 runs behind leaders Surrey, who will end the day on top no matter what.

Batting has been a bit easier this time round, but take nothing away form Dawid Malan, who battled hard for his unbeaten 69 in an innings that has occupied 173 balls.
