    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 177-5 (59 overs)

And, after 10 and a half hours at the crease, that's all the cricketing entertainment for the day.

The BBC commentary team will be back on at 10:30 in the morning team to prepare for what might be only one ball, from Trent Bridge, as India prepare to wrap up victory over England in the third Test.

Assuming Lancashire's Jimmy Anderson does not help Adil Rashid pull off the greatest cricketing miracle ever, then the Trent Bridge denouement will simply pave the way for his county team to take centre stage.

Kevin Howells, Mark Church and Scott Read will be all there at The Oval to describe the conclusion of the Surrey-Lancashire game.

  3. Close of playpublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 177-5 (59 overs)

That's a great effort from Lancashire's sixth-wicket partners Steven Croft and debutant Josh Bohannon, who complete a 50 stand from the fourth ball off Rikki Clarke's last over.

Having now put on 52, Lancs still need 94 more runs to win.

    Surrey need five more wickets.

  4. Two overs left todaypublished at 20:54 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 173-5 (57 overs)

The run chase is down to under 100 now. Just 98 needed. The stand between Josh Bohannon and Steven Croft is worth 46.

  5. Clarke makes cracking returnpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 166-5 (55 overs)

A clearly fired-up Rikki Clarke make a lively return to the attack, causing one or two problems with his extra height. But Lancs survive one big shout and one near miss.

Four overs left. Steven Croft on to 22. Josh Bohannon on 17.

In the final pink-ball game of the Championship season, with the game likely to be wrapped up before the lights come on tomorrow, and after a so far less than successful experiment, the BBC commentary team are discussing whether we are coming to the end of the final session of day/night cricket.

  6. Postpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 163-5 (53 overs)

Steven Croft (21) and Josh Bohannon (15) battle on to within six overs of the close.

Thanks to Croft's edged four, the boundary dearth is over.

Then England's Sam Curran gets a warning after bowling a beamer at Croft, which is not only no-balled, but costs four byes. Croft accepts the apology.

The runs have come steadily. 108 needed now.

Morne Morkel is back on. And Rikki Clarke is warming up. Surrey anxious for another breakthrough tonight.

  7. ouch!

Postpublished at 20:27 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 156-5 (52 overs)

Substitute fielder Will Jacks receives treatment after a full-blooded pull from Josh Bohannon bludgeons into his elbow, at short leg.

It stopped an otherwise certain boundary, but it must have been very painful.

He goes off. A hobbling Aaron Finch comes back on to replace him.

Coming on top of the earlier loss of Jade Dernbach and Jason Roy's self-inflicted facial injury with his bat last week, Surrey sure aren't having much luck on the injury front of late.

  8. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 149-5 (49 overs)

10 overs left in the day.

These two have now put on 24 together.

122 still needed. Obviously not tonight. Especially as it has been 40 minutes since a Lancashire boundary. But the visitors still have hope.

  9. Has the pendulum swung?published at 20:04 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 145-5 (47 overs)

"I think the pendulum has swung in Surrey's favour," says BBC Radio London's Mark Church. "But I still think we'll be back here tomorrow."

126 needed to win. 12 overs left tonight.

  10. Postpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 133-5

16 overs left on the third day as Morne Morkel ends his 11th over - and Championship debutant Josh Bohannon steals another couple of singles.

Bohannon knocked up a half century in the first innings. Another would do Lancashire nicely now.

138 more runs needed. With Steven Croft for company.

WICKET Jones (c sub (Jacks) b Virdi) 48published at 19:40 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 125-5

Spin, rather than pace, does the trick as Rob Jones flicks an inside edge onto the pad and Will Jacks scoops up his second short-leg catch.

A third wicket for Amar Virdi.

It's a beautiful evening in South London, says BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read, but not for the visitors as the Red Rose starts to wilt against the pink ball under the cloudless Kennington sky.

  12. Postpublished at 19:33 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 116-4

    Thanks chaps.

Slight LBW scare there for Rob Jones, who finishes Amar Virdi's 14th over on 44 - within six of a half-century.

In four previous Championship innings this season, he is yet to reach that landmark. In fact, he has only done it once in 11 first-class appearances, when he hit his maiden century against Middlesex, two years ago.

Now it's his turn to face the pace of Morne Morkel.

  13. Postpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

So with the match in the balance at The Oval, it's time to hand over to Ged Scott to guide you through the remainder of the final session.

  14. Jones holds key for Red Rosepublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211& 306 v Lancashire 247 & 108-4

This is a very tough situation for Lancashire now.

Steven Croft plays out a maiden from Amar Virdi, but Rob Jones collects a couple of twos in the next one, bowled by Rikki Clarke, to keep the scoreboard moving.

He is 43 not out. Remember, Lancashire's target is 271.

  15. wicket

WICKET Chanderpaul (c Clarke b Virdi) 2published at 19:09 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211 & 306 v Lancashire 247 & 104-4

Suddenly we have to contemplate the possibility of Surrey winning this match this evening as Shiv Chanderpaul falls cheaply to spinner Amar Virdi.

It's an error of judgment by the former West Indies batsman, who didn't need to play at that, but edges to first slip, where Rikki Clarke takes a fine catch, diving to his left.

There are 27 overs left to bowl as Steven Croft comes out to join Rob Jones, who is 38 not out.

Lancashire need another 167, but someone is going to have to bat very well indeed to see them to the finishing line.

WICKET Vilas (lbw Clarke) 3published at 19:00 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Surrey 211 & 306 v Lancashire 247 & 97-3

So, only the day-night game at The Oval left and Surrey strike early in the final session as Rikki Clarke sends back Dane Vilas. The South Africa is well forward in defence but the ball strikes the front pad and the umpire adjudges that it would have hit the stumps.

Shiv Chanderpaul is the new batsman for Lancashire, who need another 174, and the angle of their task has taken an uphill turn.

  17. Notts cling on against Hampshirepublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Hants 277 & 399-7 dec v Notts 166 & 128-4

Riki Wessels is hit on the pad. Big appeal but umpire Russell Warrren says no.

He steers the last ball safely past Jimmy Adams - and that's it for today.

It's been a tough one for Notts, but with six wickets in hand they can dare to dream of escape tomorrow.

There's been some spin for sure, but little else for the bowlers. A nominal 383 to win - but this is a game of survival for Notts now.

    Hants 277 & 399-7 dec v Notts 166 & 128-4

Wessels gets a single off the third ball of Abbott's over and Mullaney is forward on the defensive.

    One over to go.

With four wickets down and just three overs left tonight - can Notts pull off a draw?

Mullaney is well forward to Dawson to defend. Five men around the bat. Maiden over. Two more to survive.

  20. Salt puts Sussex in chargepublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Sussex 440 & 353-6 dec v Derbyshire 389 & 6-0

Derbyshire's openers survive seven overs from Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer at Hove, but the visitors face a tall order of scoring another 399 on the final day to beat promotion-chasing Sussex.

Phil Salt played one of the best innings of the summer for the home side, making 148 from only 138 balls, with five sixes and 14 fours, and shared an opening stand of 191 in only 31 overs with Luke Wells (78).

They will only need nine wickets to win, with Ravi Rampaul playing no further part after his health scare on the opening day.
