Summary

  • Surrey need four more points to seal title

  • Burns reaches 100 for leaders at Worcs

  • Second-placed Somerset beaten by Hampshire

  • Yorkshire v Lancashire; Notts v Essex

  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Brown c Tattersall b Coad 43 (Lancs 105-1 v Yorks 209)

First ball of the day from Ben Coad after a slightly delayed start in Leeds - and Yorkshire strike.

Karl Brown gets a little tickle to a ball down legside and he's gone.

Steven Croft comes in to join the other overnight batman, Alex Davies, who began day two on 57.

  2. wicket

Green b Abbott 0 (Somerset 0-1 trail Hampshire by 42 runs)

    Nightmare start for Somerset.

Kyle Abbott took 5-31 in the first innings and has his first wicket here already - the ball came right back off a perfect length and Somerset opener Ben Green is left wondering what happened.

Green didn't play it particularly well and Somerset are 0-1, still trailing by 42 runs.

  3. Somerset start second inningspublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Hampshire 148 v Somerset 106 & 0-0

Somerset are under way in their second innings - Marcus Trescothick and Ben Green out to bat.

The trail by 42 runs in the gloom at the Ageas Bowl and will likely need more than the 106 they got yesterday to get a positive result.

Dale Steyn opens the bowling for Hampshire.

  4. Could Surrey do the job today?published at 10:44 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Worcestershire 284-6 v Surrey

If wickets continue to fall in Southampton at the same rate as they did yesterday, and Somerset fail to rally against Hampshire, then Surrey would move even closer to their first County Championship title since 2002.

If Somerset lose, then one more bowling point and maximum batting points for Surrey against Worcestershire would be enough.

Surrey's total of nine wins from 11 games this season is three more than Somerset and 'most wins' is the chief determining factor if teams finish level on points. And they need another six points to be sure of doing that.

The only problem is actually getting on the pitch at New Road.

A delayed start was already anticipated after overnight rain - and now it is hoying it down. BBC Hereford & Worcester's Dave Bradley has just predicted "it could be an on and off day here".

  5. It's grim at Grace Roadpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Mike Taylor

No play likely in Leicester before lunch I would suggest, although no formal announcements for now.

It started raining about 9.30 but the forecast is better later.

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Edwards c&b C Overton 8 (Hampshire 148 v Somerset 106)

That's the Hampshire innings promptly wrapped up.

Fidel Edwards is caught and bowled by Craig Overton for eight with the 10th delivery of the day.

Kyle Abbott finishes 10 not out after his five wickets on day one, and Hampshire are all out for 148 - a 42-run lead over Somerset going into the second innings.

    Hampshire 147-9 v Somerset 106

Fidel Edwards opens the scoring on day two with an excellent extra cover drive to the boundary for four.

It takes Hampshire's lead to 41 runs - a very useful advantage in such a low-scoring match.

Josh Davey and Craig Overton are bowling for Somerset as they look to end this innings ASAP.

  11. Denly for England, says Stevenspublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

As the second oldest Englishman still playing county cricket, at 42, and having just signed a new one-year deal, Kent's Darren Stevens knows a thing or two about what makes a good player. He showed that again at Lord's against Middlesex yesterday, taking 4-44 with the ball, then hitting 64 with the bat.

And he is adamant that his Kent team-mate Joe Denly could be the answer to one of England's batting problems.

"He's got to be pushing for the winter tour," Denly told BBC Radio Kent at the conclusion of Monday's wicket-filled first day at Lord's.

"How can he not be? He bowls, bats and whatever he is doing at the moment he is doing really well. I reckon he would be a good pick. He is in the form of his life, getting runs, wickets.

Denly has even opened for England before - and in the company of Alastair Cook too, one of his 21 former international opening partners, having played in two of the only four T20s the retiring former England skipper played in.

"Even if they said ''Would you open?', I'd say 'Why not?' He bats at three and has opened in his career. He has sorted his technique out and is playing nice and straight now. His bowling is kicking on now too. He's a fine player."

  13. Oh Martin, Martin . . . Martin, Martin, Martin Anderssonpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

This time last week Middlesex youngster Martin Andersson had never played County Championship cricket.

A week later - and he has made his debut for two different counties.

Andersson made his Championship debut last Tuesday out on loan for Derbyshire in their win against Glamorgan, taking a matchwinning 4-25 in the second innings. But then he got recalled by Middlesex - and took two of the 19 wickets to fall against Kent on day one yesterday.

"I got a call about 10pm on Sunday night to say 'Expect a call in the morning' as I might be playing for Middlesex," Andersson told BBC Radio London.

"So, I woke up at 6:30pm, got the call and had to make the two-hour journey from Northamptonshire (where Derbyshire are playing this week)."
