It's been Surrey's day, as they wrapped up their first County Championship title since 2002 with victory at Worcestershire.

Look at the emotion.

Last man Ravi Rampaul hits the winning runs for Derbyshire to settle this Wantage Road thriller.

But wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein is the real hero, having hit an unbeaten 54 to see his side to only their fourth Championship win of the season.

With two games left, Derbyshire climb to fourth in the Division Two table, above fifth-placed Middlesex, who they face at Lord's next week.

Northants, who are 22 points adrift in ninth, are also on the road in their penultimate game - against Gloucestershire at Bristol. But the real issue in Division Two next week is who goes up?

Can third-placed Sussex, who first face T20 Finals Day on Saturday, stop leaders Warwickshire and Kent going up?

To a certain extent, it's in their own hands, as they host the Bears at Hove. They will start that game 33 points in arrears but Warwickshire's final game is at home to Kent, so all is far from certain yet.

Morne Morkel took eight wickets and hit the winning runs as Surrey beat Worcestershire to lift the County Championship title for the first time in 16 years.

"What took them so long," he joked to Radio 5 Live from the BBC radio box at New Road. "It's a special feeling - I woke up this morning and knew I was going to play a small part.

"To clinch the trophy with two games to go is unbelievable - I've been blown away by the season so far and enjoyed it so much.

"The most important thing for us is to really finish the season on a high and then celebrate with the trophy."

Worcestershire - county cricket's number one yoyo club over the past 15 years - will be almost certainly be relegated once again if they fail to beat last season's champions Essex at Chelmsford next week.

But head coach Kevin Sharp still could not have been prouder of his young team in taking this season's new champions Surrey all the way at New Road.

"It was a terrific game of cricket that could have gone either way right to the end," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester. "The lads have gone toe to toe with the county champions and I’m very proud of them.

“The Morne Morkel spell on the third evening was the difference. I think he was going to be coming off and then he bowled Ed Barnard with the last ball of an over. He then bowls a bit more, bowled fantastically well, and got two or three wickets, and that did make the difference.

“You can always say we could have done some things a bit better. We could have batted a bit better or be tidier with the ball in places. But our conversation in the dressing room has been a very positive one. The lads can be very proud of themselves, to fight and scrap like they did. You wouldn’t have known it was a top versus bottom clash.

“I know it’s going to be tough now. I see my old club Yorkshire won today so they’ve got quite a bit ahead of us. We have to win the last two and hope other results will have to go our way. But, in the meantime, we’ve got something very special to look forward to at Finals Day.”

Thomas: Morne Morkel has been pivotal and gotten the wickets when we needed them. He was so unlucky in the Test series last year and this year he's been, along with Onions, the best bowler in England.

Lancashire looked on a par with new county champions Surrey when both sides were promoted back to English cricket's top flight in 2015 - Surrey as Division Two winners, Lancs as runners-up.

After a season to re-establish themselves in 2016, Lancs then looked to be making real progress when they finished ahead of third-placed Surrey as runners-up to Essex just a year ago.

Yet now, in 2018, on the day when Surrey were crowned champions, Lancs suffered the Roses match defeat that all but guarantees relegation back to Division Two.

With Tom Bailey (56) and Graham Onions (57) having taken well over 100 wickets between them, as the country's leading wicket takers, it is not hard to see where to point the finger of blame.

"If you take last season, whenever we lost early wickets, we had big partnerships to get us up to big scores," head coach Glen Chapple told BBC Radio Lancashire. "But we haven't done that this year.

"Generally, as a batting unit, we haven't scored enough runs. We've got good players. But too many have had poor seasons.

"We've got ourselves into a position in the table that was precarious through losing close games. This one is disappointing because we had such a good first day and played so well.

"To not hammer that advantage home is frustrating. We didn't make enough runs and force Yorkshire into enough pressure. In the conditions they're used to here, they came back well and outplayed us."

"I think Surrey have planned ahead extremely well. It's been very clever and shrewd, looking three to four years down the line.

"The likes of Liam Plunkett and Jordan Clark are already on their way next season and they're going to be crucial as Surrey fans probably won't see a huge amount of Sam Curran and Ollie Pope if they kick on with England.

"Plunkett will probably move on from England commitments after the World Cup and will be available throughout.

"Morne Morkel will still be there - that signing's been a stroke of genius and everyone knows what he brings to the party.

"On top of that, there's the likes of Will Jacks, Ryan Patel, and Amar Virdi who've all come through the academy and established themselves.

"Everything's in place to ensure they can do their best to stay at the top."

One man who deserves plenty of plaudits is Surrey head coach Michael di Venuto.

The former Australia one-day international, 44, arrived at the Oval in April 2016, when his county experience was described by Alec Stewart as "invaluable".

Di Venuto won the county title twice as a player at Durham, and can now add a third crown as a coach.

1241: Runs scored by opener Rory Burns, at an average of 68.94. The left-hander has made 345 more runs than Hampshire's James Vince, the second-highest scorer in Division One this season.

4: Burns has made more centuries than any other player in the top flight this term.

50: Wickets taken by South African quick Morne Morkel. The 33-year-old's haul has come from eight matches since arriving as a Kolpak player, with a bowling average of 13.96.

36: The age of veteran all-rounder Rikki Clarke, who has contributed 443 runs at 34.07 and 43 wickets at 20.72 after rejoining the county last year.

15: Clarke also has the second highest number of catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Division One, with only Worcestershire's Daryl Mitchell (20) ahead of him.
