Four five-wicket hauls and 50 wickets in all, at an average of 13.94.

Morne Morkel's class was never in doubt, but even Surrey couldn't have believed the 33-year-old would have such an impact when he joined in April.

The South African seamer took 309 Test wickets for South Africa and has taken to the County Championship like a duck to water.

    Surrey win County Championship

10: Surrey have matched last year's champions Essex for number of wins with two games to spare. Another victory would see them equal Yorkshire's 2015 record of 11 (from 16 games) since the Championship split into two divisions.

5: half of Surrey's victories have been by an innings.

592: Surrey's second-innings total against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge is the highest team score in the County Championship this season.

0: Knockout games played by Surrey in limited-overs cricket this season after they were eliminated from the group stage of both the One-Day Cup and the T20 Blast.

    Surrey win County Championship

When Surrey last won the County Championship in 2002, everything looked in place for more trophies to follow.

But that wasn't to be as a crop of club legends including Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Adam Hollioake and Mark Butcher moved towards the back-end of their careers.

"I remember 2003 being a very transitional time," BBC Radio London's Mark Church recalls.

"If there's a group of players like that who all start moving on at the same time, it's very difficult to replace.

"It was when Graham Ford came in as head coach in 2013, Alec Stewart looked at what was there in the academy and said, 'Let's play them. It might hurt for a while, but let's give them a chance.'

"That was a group including Rory Burns, Arun Harinath, Zafar Ansari and the Curran brothers. Gareth Batty as captain took it by the scruff of the neck and laid the foundations for what was to come."

  5. Meanwhile, there's one more game still going onpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 13 September 2018

    Northants 255 & 199, Derbyshire 222 & 155-5 - target 233)

There's a little less at stake at Wantage Road where Northamptonshire are playing Derbyshire. Just a matter of who finishes precisely where in the Division Two table.

But it's the only game now taking place and, at tea, it's boiling up into just as exciting a contest of County Championship cricket.

Needing 233 to win after Derbyshire paceman Tony Palladino quickly took the final two Northants wickets inside three balls this morning, the visitors looked well set on 98-1.

They then lost four quick wickets after lunch in slumping to 122-5, Ben Sanderson taking two of those wickets in an unbroken 13-over spell.

But, at the game's final interval, Alex Hughes and Harvey Hosein had put on a timely 33 for the sixth wicket to reduce the target to 78.

Rob Owens: Almost feels a bit retro seeing Surrey win the CC. Shame Rikki Clarke couldn't get the winning runs but Morkel has been outstanding.

Ged Ashton: Congratulations to Surrey for winning the championship, they outplayed all teams. Thoroughly deserved.

Andrew Hamilton: Congrats to Surrey, but the sooner we get rid of these dismal 2 divisions and move to the conference format proposed by Martyn Moxon, the better for English cricket and the less wealthy counties like Worcs.

Surrey's title success has featured some experienced and world-class heads in the shape of Morne Morkel and Rikki Clarke, but a crop of academy graduates, including recent England Test debutant Ollie Pope have also been integral.

"It's been lovely to see so many of our young players, who've come through the system, be a key part of it alongside some more experienced, world-class heads leading them along the way," chief executive Richard Gould told BBC Sport.

"The club's had to wait a long time since its last Championship title and during that period, we've worked really hard to reinvigorate all of our processes to recruit players.

"The challenge ahead will be to continue pushing for Championship titles and keep providing players for England and fill the gaps when those players go off and perform."

"I've already said several times on commentary that if he's not on the plane to Sri Lanka, I'll be lying down on the Tarmac at Heathrow in protest stopping it taking off.

"Burns has been Mr Consistent for the past five years, seeing the shine off the new ball, churning out big hundreds under pressure.

"He leads from the front as captain as well. He captained England Lions in a tour match against India A in July and finally got the chance to show the England management what he's about.

"Since then, he's racked up more hundreds. He's a good player of spin, it'll be tough in Sri Lanka but England will be getting a guy in form.

"If as an opening batsman, your currency is runs, he's got cash in the bank as he's consistently scored runs over the past five or six seasons."

    Surrey are county champions again.

Morne Morkel hits the winning runs by belting Dillon Pennington for four to complete their ninth win on the trot - and 10th in their 12 games overall.

Nobody more appropriate to have done so after all the big South African has done with the ball this summer.

Rikki Clarke is the not out batsman on 18 as he earns another County Championship success on the ground where he also won it with Warwickshire in 2012.

It's Surrey's 19th county title - but their first since 2002. And Rory Burns will be their 10th captain to have achieved the feat.

And it's a third Championship success for veteran Clarke, who played in nine of Surrey's games 16 years ago.

As for Worcestershire, the bravely beaten bottom club now stand 30 points adrift of safety going into their final two games.

Another twist. Tom Curran is gone. Another fine catch from Ross Whiteley as he runs round from leg gully behind keeper Alx Milton to pouch the ball which has come off Curran's glove.

A third wicket for Dillon Pennington. The tension mounts.

    Here comes Morne Morkel.

12 needed. Or three more wickets?
