As we said earlier, Kevin Pietersen thinks Jason Roy has what it takes to be a Test batsman for England (see 13:41 entry). Perhaps this is why. Like Mark Waugh at his elegant best.

  2. Vijay makes good startpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Worcestershire 94 v Essex 33-1

Murali Vijay is looking in decent nick for Essex. He's already found the boundary four times to move to 19 not out, with Tom Westley on nine at the other end. All-rounder Ed Barnard is into his second over for Worcestershire after starting with a maiden.

  3. ouch!

Tom Haines injuredpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Sussex v Warwks 144-2

Tom Haines looks to be struggling with an ankle injury here and he walks gingerly off the field after completing an over that cost 14 runs.

  4. Hampshire held back by Lyth and Ballancepublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 67-2 v Hants

Gareth Berg joins the attack and is turned onto the on side by Ballance for one. One more wicket needed for the first bowling point for Hampshire - and five needed after that to be safe in Division One.

Yorkshire look comfortable at the moment though, with the runs coming at nearly five an over since Brook was out.

We asked you whether it's now time for Jamie Porter to be given his chance in a Test match by England.

From Andy Gould: "Based on the fact that England currently use 2 proper pace bowlers, and then allrounders, he either needs to be better than Broad and Anderson, or improve his batting! #bbccricket, external"

From Tim Carlisle: "#bbccricket, external issue for Porter is not whether he is good enough to do well at Test Level but how many other bowlers are also good enough. He won't be picked ahead of Curran, Woakes etc because of their batting so it's really down to Jimmy and Broady. Roland-Jones comes back too..."

    Keep them coming!

  6. Bell and Trott rebuildpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Sussex v Warwks 129-2

Ian Bell aims a flashing drive through point. He hasn't quite got hold of it but picks up one off Danny Briggs.

Jonathan Trott defends. Warwickshire remain becalmed since their openers put on 96 in 25.5 overs but remain in good shape here - with a healthy lead at the top of the second division.

  7. Division Two round-uppublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

Here's the latest at Lord's, Bristol and Grace Road.

Sam Robson has helped Middlesex get off to a solid start at home to Derbyshire. He has 70 not out, while Stevie Eskinazi has 34.

The one wicket to fall was Nick Gubbins, who was lbw to Hardus Viljoen for 30.

Leicestershire have recovered to 111-2 after slipping to 66-2 against visitors Durham. Ateeq Javid is 58 not out and has put on 45 runs to date with Mark Cosgrove.

Northants are firmly in charge at Bristol, where Gloucestershire are reeling on 62-6, with two wickets each for Ben Sanderson and Brett Hutton and one apiece for Ben Cotton and Nathan Buck.

Chris Dent resisted for 78 balls before being caught by Cotton off the bowling of Hutton for 15.

    Surrey 147-1 v Somerset

    Jamie OvertonImage source, Getty

That's the kind of ball that has brought Jamie Overton to the attention of the England selectors.

The Somerset fast bowler bends his back and digs in a short one at Mark Stoneman, who cannot do any more than fend it away to gully from the shoulder of the bat.

He'll be disappointed to miss out on a hundred after batting so well, but Somerset have the breakthrough at last.

Jason Roy comes to the crease for his first Championship innings of the summer. Former team-mate Kevin Pietersen believes Roy should be in the England Test team, external - now he's got a chance to show just what he can do against a red ball.

  9. wicket

WICKET Meschede (c Crawley b Stewart) 16published at 13:37 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Glamorgan 110-6 v Kent

There's the second bowling point for Kent as Craig Meschede drives loosely and is taken in the slips. The batsman's body language suggests he's not impressed with himself. Two wickets now for Grant Stewart, and text commentator's nightmare Ruaidhri Smith is the new batsman, with Jack Murphy still there on 42 not out.

  10. Hampshire search for third wicketpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 60-2 v Hants

Shot! The White Rose pass 50 with a pull through mid wicket for four by Ballance off Edwards - and the batsman gets four more through the covers.

A full toss is duly dispatched through the covers for four more.

After a couple of early wickets, the pressure is now firmly back on the visitors.

A big appeal for lbw is turned down to end the over.

The ball swung in late. Doing too much?

  11. 50 runs

for Rory Burnspublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Surrey 133-0 v Somerset

    Rory BurnsImage source, Rex Features

Three runs off Josh Davey carries Surrey skipper Rory Burns to an 87-ball fifty, his seventh of the summer, to go with four hundreds. Looks like he is determined to keep racking up the runs until he receives a plane ticket marked Sri Lanka from the England selectors.

  12. Warwickshire pinned down by Sussexpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Sussex v Warwks 114-2

This has been stoic stuff from Trott and Bell, with just 12 runs for Warwickshire since lunch.

The visitors remain in a strong position overall though and will be desperate not to fritter away their advantage at the top of the table.

Ian Bell has passed a handy landmark on the way to his seven runs here to date...

I think they mean "mid wicket", by the way.

WICKET Browne (b Parnell) 5published at 13:25 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Worcestershire 94 v Essex 9-1

    Wayne ParnellImage source, Rex

Jamie Porter bowled some excellent deliveries this morning at Chelmsford, but that one from Wayne Parnell is just as good, moving away slightly off the pitch and flattening Nick Brown'es off stump. That will put some heart into the Worcestershire fielders as they try to claw their way back into the game.

  14. Worcs need early breakthroughpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Worcestershire 94 v Essex 9-0

How will Worcestershire respond to being bowled out in one session? They need a special performance in the field, that's for sure.

Nick Browne gets Essex up and running with a boundary off Josh Tongue and India's Murali Vijay, kaing his first Essex appearance at Chelmsford, follows suit with a straight drive in the Pears paceman's next over.

  15. Lyth and Ballance rebuildpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 41-2 v Hants

Lovely shot from Adam Lyth, who drives Edwards through the covers for four.

Can he rebuild with Gary Ballance?

Kyle Abbott to continue from the other end and Ballance picks up a couple down to square leg.

Ballance drives through the covers for four!

Four more through the covers! Abbott responds with a no ball.

    14 off the over altogether.

  16. Afternoon session begins at Hovepublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Sussex v Warwks 102-2

Sussex will have a bit of a spring in their step after prizing out both Warwickshire openers just before the break.

Can they strike early this afternoon?

Ollie Robinson to bowl to Jonathan Trott.

  17. wicket

WICKET Brook (b Edwards) 0published at 13:13 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 22-2 v Hants

There's another one! Harry Brook can't get a bat on the second ball of the fourth over from Fidel Edwards and the ball clips the top of the off stump.

Nearly identical to the Jeet Raval dismissal.

Gary Ballance joins Adam Lyth in the middle.

  18. wicket

WICKET Raval (b Abbott) 8published at 13:09 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 21-1 v Hants

The umpires are having a look at the ball. It looks like Hampshire want to change it, but it has induced the odd play and miss so far.

That'll do! Kyle Abbott pitches up and squeezes through the defences of Jeet Raval, just clipping the top of off stump.

    Harry Brook to bat next.

  19. Hampshire search for breakthroughpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Yorks 19-0 v Hants

    Maiden from Kyle Abbott.

Edwards is struggling a bit with his line at times but he beats Lyth with a beauty outside the off stump with his fourth ball.

Two maidens in a row for Hampshire.
