We've had a shout of ball-tampering from across the office to answer my last question. Yes that is probably worse than a spinner bowling a no ball. Maybe not running your bat in and being run out is worse too.

Root might just be feeling the heat here. He's looking a little red in the face and calls for another drink. It's hard work trying to run hard in these conditions. Root is changing his gloves again as well.

Is this another drop? It's very tough and would have been very unlucky. Root inside edges one into his boot when sweeping and the ball loops up in the air. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella gets a hand to the ball but is wrong-footed and can't hold on. It's hard to tell on the replays whether the ball just flicked the ground before the boot. It would have been a difficult one for the third umpire.

Later in the over, spinner Lakshan Sandakan bowls a no ball. Is there a bigger sin in cricket?

It has clouded over a little in Dambulla but it doesn't look like it's about to rain yet. The Sri Lankan steel band is in the ground again and giving a lovely backing track to this match.

Malinga is back into the attack and founds more uneven bounce. The accumulation continues.

Paul Wilson: Not really movies, but Duran Duran filmed the odd music video in Sri Lanka in the 1980's. Dunno if any of the band members are cricket fans though.

We'll widen our earlier topic of conversation. Has anyone ever met a music star at the cricket? Keep sending in your meetings with film stars too.

50 for Rootpublished at 19 overs

And now Root moves to 50 from 54 balls. It's his 29th in ODIs. There's no big celebration. He knows he has got work to do and has just got away with one massively.

  8. dropped catch

Root dropped on 48published at 18.1 overs

This could be massive. Dhananjaya de Silva has dropped a sitter. It's Joe Root as well.

Root gets a full toss from Lakshan Sandakan and he tries to clip it away through the leg side but hits the ball straight to mid-wicket. De Silva doesn't have to move but the ball hits his hands and drops out.

  9. Eng 88-2published at 18 overs

    Root 48, Morgan 10

I think I might have done Thisara Perera a disservice earlier. He's proving tricky to play here. Whether that is through skill or the awkward pitch I'm not sure, however. He gets one to jump off a length and it surprises Morgan. Thisara has one wicket for 20 runs from five overs.

A car advertising a well-known energy drink cruised onto the outfield during the drinks break, complete with an enormous can of the product perched at an angle on the roof. The overall effect is of something you might see in a military parade.

  11. Eng 85-2published at 17 overs

The drinks have been put back in that unnecessary car with a big energy drink can attached to the roof.

Thisara Perera is going to continue.

    Eng 85-2published at 17 overs

Joe Root has 46 runs at pretty much at a run-a-ball already. He's so good at accumulating. It doesn't even feel like he's done anything flash in this innings. Five runs come from this over and that's drinks. We've had two more overs than we managed on Wednesday already.

  16. How's stat?!published at 06:25 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

Going into today's match, Joe Root is averaging 63.5 across his 20 ODI innings in 2018; he recorded a rate of 60+ in 2016 (61.2 from 14 knocks) and 2017 (70.2 from 18 innings) too.

  17. 6 runs

    Eng 80-2published at 16 overs

    Root 44, Morgan 6

Back on that Jonny Bairstow being bowled a lot thing. We've looked at the stats. In 43 innings in all formats this year he has been bowled 11 times. It gets even worse too. He has been bowled four times in his last 10 innings. That seems very high. A concern?

Eoin Morgan has actually had a fair bit of time at the crease in England's rain-affected matches on this tour. He skips down the pitch and clatters Thisara for the first six of the day in classic Eoin Morgan flat-bat style.

  18. Eng 73-2published at 15 overs

Eoin Morgan is done up like a kipper by Lakshan Sandakan. The England captain goes to cut but it's the wrong-un from the mystery spinner and the ball cuts back, hitting Morgan on the pad. The Sri Lankans plead for the lbw but, luckily for Morgan, he had got himself outside the line of off stump.

  19. Eng 72-2published at 14 overs

    Root 42, Morgan 0

Eoin Morgan joins Joe Root in the middle. Once again England's Test captain and one-day captain are batting together. This is pretty much the exact situation we were in the other day. England two down with Root and Morgan in.

Those with a keen eye will notice England are wearing their red T20 kit for this ODI series, rather than the previously-seen blue.

Apparently it's to do with regulations to stop kit clashes - regulations that don't appear to be an issue in Test cricket...
