  1. Eng 187-3published at 07:41 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Morgan 70 Stokes 14

That's the first boundary for Ben Stokes with an on-the-up drive through mid off dismissively sending Nuwan Pradeep on his way - and there's a nice pose for the photographers at the end.

The Cricket Social is back again today following a entertaining debut for the first ODI.

Charles Dagnall, Ebony Rainford Brent, Andy Zaltzman, Simon Hughes, Jimmy Anderson and none other than former England captain Mike Brearley will be in the studio to analyse the play in Dambulla and discuss all things cricket.

    Morgan 69 Stokes 9

More boundary fodder is feasted upon by Eoin Morgan, this time from Dhananjaya de Silva with an ugly short one smashed over midwicket. Seven off that over as the players take a drinks break - or 'taking on fluids', as they say these days.

This is a very intelligent and calculated innings from England. No side in the world will be able to chase 260+ on this pitch as long as Morgan rotates his spinners.

  5. Eng 174-3published at 34 overs

    Morgan 64 Stokes 3

Eoin Morgan is motoring now, slapping left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan through midwicket for four, but then misses out when a half-tracker goes straight at a fielder. He gets the strike back late in the over, and sweeps from outside off stump past square leg for another four.

Here's a belter from Cricviz's Patrick Noone. And going off these calculations, Root won't be dismissed again in this series (England next play Croatia on 18 November!).

A comfortable 70odd and out? Joe Root, surely not? Really!? Double check that for me...

50 for Morganpublished at 07:27 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Eng 162-3

England's captain reaches his half-century with a single, then finds the boundary with a four past wide long on.

  9. Eng 155-3published at 31 overs

    Morgan 49 Stokes 3

Eoin Morgan picks Dhananjaya de Silva up from outside off stump and clubs it straight down the ground for the skipper's second six. There's the obligatory glove touch at the end of the over as the two left-handers come together for a chinwag.

  10. Eng 147-3published at 30 overs

    Morgan 42 Stokes 2

Eoin Morgan reverse sweeps a four early in Dasun Shanaka's over, but when Ben Stokes essays a conventional sweep off the last ball, it pops up into the air for a worrying moment.

Finally, Sri Lanka have their breakthrough as Joe Root gets a leading edge that loops slowly into the covers to be comfortably pouched. England's Test captain trudges off, chuntering away and pointing to something back in the middle - not a happy bunny.

  12. Shaw dominates for Indiapublished at 07:13 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

India's batsman are marmalising the West Indies' bowlers in the second Test in Hyderabad. At least, Prithvi Shaw is. The boy wonder, who scored a century in the first Test, has creamed a 39-ball half-century at the top of the order. India are 80-1 after 16 overs, responding to the tourists' 311 all out. Full scorecard here.

  13. Eng 138-2published at 28 overs

    Root 70 Morgan 36

Eoin Morgan breaks the shackles by fetching a short one from Thisara Perera from outside off stump and sending it down to the long leg boundary.

  14. Eng 132-2published at 27 overs

    Root 69 Morgan 31

England are in nurdle mode at the moment, but that's a good, tight over from Akila Dananjaya with just a single coming from it. The run rate dips slightly under five an over.

  15. Eng 131-2published at 26 overs

    Root 69 Morgan 30

    Thank you, Matt!

We have the first alarm for a while as Dasun Shanaka shies at the stumps from the covers but misses - had he hit, Joe Root was some way short of his ground.

  16. Eng 127-2published at 25 overs

    Root 67, Morgan 28

Root grimaces again after jogging another single.

He'll be grateful Eoin Morgan is going well right now. Again Morgan finds the boundary with a strong sweep down to fine leg. That's his fourth boundary and also brings up the 50 partnership between England white and red ball captains.

Unlike Joe Root I can now nip for a breather. Here's Tim Oscroft to take you through the next period of play.

First of all... what are you doing up at this time on a Saturday morning?

Now for the good news: we've had continuous play in a sunny Dambulla so far and there doesn't seem to be any imminent rain.

England are batting first on a tricky pitch. They lost Jason Roy in the first over and then Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow steadied things.

Bairstow was then bowled through the gate by Thisara but Root, despite appearing to be struggling in the oppressive heat, remains there having brought up a run-a-ball half-century. He is joined by Eoin Morgan at the crease.

Sri Lanka have given Root a big let-off, however. Dhananjaya de Silva dropped a regulation catch when he was on 48.

  18. How's stat?!published at 06:58 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Andy Zaltzman
    The Cricket Social statistician

Joe Root has now scored 304 runs in ODIs since his last dismissal (113*, 100*, 25* and 66*), putting him top on the all-time list for England. Hick (301, in 1999) was top. World record is 455, Fakar Zaman (117*, 43*, 210*, 85), earlier this year.

  19. Eng 121-2published at 24 overs

    Root 66, Morgan 23

Chandimal is making another change. Nuwan Pradeep, probably Sri Lanka's quickest bowler, is back and beats Morgan for pace.

A good over from Pradeep is ruined by the excellence of Joe Root. Pradeep gets just slightly too full and Root flicks to the mid-wicket boundary. Root chunters along to 66.

  20. Eng 115-2published at 23 overs

    Root 61, Morgan 22

Sri Lanka are reverting to Akila Dananjaya, the first mystery spinner we saw today...

How has that missed?! Eoin Morgan tries to slog sweep the the right-armer, who can bowl leg and off-breaks, but misses completely. Somehow the ball spins past the off stump. Morgan is even 'oooooo-ing' himself. He knows that was close.

Four dots in a row to Morgan. The pressure builds...

Shot. He takes a step down and wristily chips over extra cover for four.
