    Bairstow b Thisara 26 (Eng 72-2)

Why does Jonny Bairstow get bowled so often these days?! It's another tight over from seamer Thisara Perera and in the end the pressure tells. Bairstow tries to loft him over the infield but misses and sees his off stump knocked back again.

Paul Evans: Hoping a Root 50 might help lower the noise of the very excited Sri Lankan’s sat by me. He looks well set

Mark Taylor: Re Bridge over the River Kwai (5:45am), bought the DVD yesterday from Amazon for aa 1p. Seems wrong that it should cost so little. looking forward to watching it later, it's been years.

    Bairstow 25, Root 41

Considering England collapsed into a shuddering heap at the first sight of Kuldeep in the India T20 series this is much more promising. A single comes off every ball of Sandakan's over of left-arm wrist spin.

Here comes Sri Lanka's second mystery spinner.

It's left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan. He's Sri Lanka's version of Kuldeep Yadav.

The well-built Thisara Perera is continuing to trundle in. Bairstow wants to get after the medium-quick but doesn't time his pull. That's a better over in truth from Thisara. He finds a bit of swing to finish.

    Jungle

This ground really is in the jungle - palm trees surround the stadium, and there's not another building in sight.

The wildlife's not bad, too. Monkeys dodged the cars on the main road as we drove in, and at night a cloud of moths and flying insects descends on the area.

More good running from England. It's hotting up in Sri Lanka, Bairstow and Root have both had towels run out from the dressing room a couple of times, but without doing anything dangerous England add seven runs in Dananjaya's latest over. This isn't a 380 pitch, I don't think, so England are doing well.

    Bairstow 19, Root 31

We've still got bright sunshine in Sri Lanka. Let's not get ahead of ourselves but we might get more than an hour's play today. Perera doesn't look like he has the pace to trouble Root. The England number three seems to have plenty of time to push him through the covers. England are ticking along at 5.40 runs per over.

  10. India v West Indies latestpublished at 05:57 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

An update from Hyderabad for you, where West Indies have been bowled out for 311 in the second Test against India. Roston Chase was the tourists' hero, making 106 to help his side recover from 113-5 to post a competitive total. Full scorecard here.

Also, Thisara Perera is only 29. Incredible.

Jonny Bairstow looks far more comfortable against the spinner. He clubs Akila Dananjaya twice over the leg side for boundaries to mid-wicket. The first of those boundaries sees Bairstow pass another landmark. He's now passed 2,000 career ODI runs.

Remember when he couldn't get in this team?!

How was he, Andrew? I must admit I'm a big Harry Potter fan.

There was some questionable fielding from Nuwan Pradeep for one of Joe Root's boundaries earlier but now Dasun Shanaka gets a pat on the back from three or four teammates after some good work in the covers.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has talked a lot about improving his side's fielding. He applauds from his position at mid-off.

  16. Eng 37-1published at 7 over

We saw in the few overs he bowled on Wednesday that Akila Dananjaya can spin it both ways. Here he gets an off-break to go big and it nearly gets through Bairstow's defences. There looks to be more turn than on Wednesday, even if this is being played on the same pitch.

We also saw that Dananjaya can bowl a few 'hit me' deliveries. He finishes the over with another and Bairstow hits a boundary that brings up 1000 ODI runs for him in 2018.

    Bairstow 3, Root 23

And while Joe Root is caressing the ball all around the ground on this tricky wicket, Jonny Bairstow is finding it hard to time it. In fact this time he misses the ball all together and the Sri Lankans appeal for lbw. That was going down leg.

Bairstow misses out again. The frustration must be building inside the Yorkshireman. He's struggling out there. A two on the final ball from Pradeep takes him to three from 16 deliveries.
