  1. Eng 28-1published at 5 overs

    Bairstow 1, Root 23

Oh Joe Root, behave. That's outstanding. Malinga is slight wide of off stump and Root puts the ball between the fielders at backward point and third man with a stylish flick of the wrists.

Now two more boundaries for Root!

Malinga doesn't know where to bowl to him at the minute. First he goes onto the pads and Root punishes him through the leg side. Then Malinga over-corrects and Root smashes him through the covers.

Classy batting from England's Test batsman. He has 23 runs from 16 balls.

  2. Eng 16-1published at 4 overs

    Bairstow 1, Root 11

Some of you must have some good stories of meeting film stars at the cricket. This is your chance to tell us. Fire away. Did you meet Harrison Ford in Kandy? Or someone else closer to home?

This is the type of situation England need Joe Root in their line-up of bashers. He's looked busy and composed. The England Test captain guides a push of a drive through the covers for four. Delightful. Root has 11 from nine balls already.

  3. Sri Lanka in the moviespublished at 05:31 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

The scenery around Dambulla is stunning, so it's no surprise that Sri Lanka has been used for some legendary films.

'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (1984) was set in India, but much of it was filmed around Kandy, to the south of today's venue. Not the best of the four Indy films - I still go for 'Last Crusade' - but Sri Lanka helped it look great.

  4. Eng 8-1published at 3 overs

    Bairstow 1, Root 5

It doesn't look straightforward for England. Jonny Bairstow almost mistimes one into the leg-side just as Jason Roy did earlier. The pitch doesn't look as easy as Wednesday.

That's better, although it's a rubbish delivery. Malinga drifts onto Joe Root's pads and the England number three flicks him for four for the first boundary of the day.

  5. Eng 2-1published at 2.1 overs

Shot. There's the first run for an England batsman. Joe Root stands tall and punches off the back foot for one through mid on. That's the type of shot that will make Geoffrey hum in his sleep.

The Cricket Social is back again today following a entertaining debut for the first ODI.

Charles Dagnall, Ebony Rainford Brent, Andy Zaltzman, Simon Hughes, Jimmy Anderson and none other than former England captain Mike Brearley will be in the studio to analyse the play in Dambulla and discuss all things cricket.

You'll be able to listen today from 08:00 BST by clicking the audio icon at the top of this page.

  7. Eng 1-1published at 2 overs

Nuwan Pradeep was impressive the other day and Chandimal throws him the new ball again. He makes a good start before a wide on the sixth ball of the over allows England to get off the mark.

Still no runs off the bat for England.

  9. Eng 0-1published at 1 over

    Bairstow 0, Root 0

The Sri Lankan players are buzzing around now. There's a much smaller crowd than the first ODI - disappointingly - but maybe more will turn up with this good start for the hosts.

    It's a wicket maiden.

Some quizzical looks in the press box as Jason Roy departs. A nothing shot - but did the ball just stop in the pitch a touch?

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 0.4 overs

    Roy c Dananjaya b Malinga 0 (Eng 0-1)

Not the start England were after. It's not the swing that has done for Jason Roy but it seems the pitch has certainly misbehaved. Roy stares down at the surface as if it has just punched him in the ribs.

It's a short-ish delivery from Malinga but it sticks in the pitch. Roy tries to guide the ball into the leg side but gets it all wrong and just chips the ball in the air to mid-wicket.

  12. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

There's a little bit of nibble there for Malinga on the first ball. Could this ball swing around with all the rain we have had?

Like several days this week, the sun shines in Dambulla this morning - but it's what might be to come later that's the worry.

Weather forecasting here is far from easy. Wednesday's washout saw huge lakes deposited on the outfield, yet five kilometres down the road where the England team are staying it remained dry.

Having had barely 100 overs across three matches during this tour, everyone is desperate to see if we can see a full (or full enough) game today.

Now here come Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. The England openers make their way out onto the outfield under glorious blue skies in Dambulla. There's still no sign of rain at all.

Lasith Malinga is going to open the bowling.

All seemed to be going really well...

Just like on Wednesday, this match will start with Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy at the crease.

England's opening pair made an attacking start in the first ODI, putting on 49 before both falling in quick succession.

Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan then steadied things with 25 not out and 14 not out respectively. England were 92-2 when the players were taken from the field.

Unlike Wednesday's first ODI, during which we only managed 15 overs before the rain came, today's match is a day game, not a day-nighter.

This match is playing played at the same ground as Wednesday - the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in the middle of the Sri Lankan jungle.

On Wednesday no rain was forecast and it ended up pouring down. Today lots of rain is forecast so let's hope it's wrong again.
