    Buttler 13 Woakes 3

Lasith Malinga shows off all his experience with a mixture of slower balls and yorkers to concede just six of his eighth over. Jos Buttler hasn't got going yet.

A groan of disappointment greeted what was possibly the worst hat-trick ball in history. Sri Lanka's fans may not be watching the golden generation of Jayawardene, Sangakkara et al, but they still have high hopes from this side and are as passionate as you'd expect.

That is the worst hat-trick ball I have seen.

Patrick Brennan: So, Malinga is still pretty good then?

Morgan: Just like that Sri Lanka are back in the game, Malinga showing he’s still go it.

  5. Eng 222-6published at 43 overs

    Buttler 11 Woakes 0

Right - that thing I said about "300 and plenty"? This is my ODI debut on live text, so why not get your first Curse of the Commentator in early, eh?

That's unless Jos Buttler gets stuck in, which he's perfectly capable of. He's scoring at less than a run a ball at the moment, though.

Mike Brearley is regarded as one of England's greatest captains and will be on The Cricket Social at 08:30 BST.

Brearley, the author of the book The Art of Captaincy, will be discussing Eoin Morgan's captaincy in particular.

Morgan has revolutionised the England one-day team, taking them to number one in the world, but this week said he would consider dropping himself if it benefited the team.

Joe Root has said he does not agree with that idea. He said Morgan is a brilliant leader and should always play.

Make sure you're listening to The Cricket Social to get Brearley's view.

  7. Eng 219-6published at 42 overs

    Buttler 8 Woakes 0

Malinga tries a slower one again, but it ends up as a beamer that Woakes ducks under safely

It's a no-ball, a free hit but Dhananjaya de Silva throws the stumps down. Woakes looks nervously, but he's safe.

That was right on the money by Malinga with his slower ball. As a new batsman you want something you can pick up easily first ball but he has got that horrible action and you don't get that chance.

That was a really good ball.

    Moeen Ali b Malinga 0 (Eng 219-6)

A superb slower ball deceives Moeen Ali first ball! He plays all around it and suddenly Sri Lanka are right on top! Chris Woakes will face the hat-trick ball...

That was an interesting innings from Eoin Morgan. In the first portion he struggled and was scratching around. He stuck at it and that is what is good with him. He had gone well and will be bit gutted to have missed out on a century.

Gone! The 100 that looked so certain a few overs ago is not to be as Eoin Morgan mistimes one and spoons it straight back to Lasith Malinga!

We have dragged England's record holder out of bed. He's not had a great night but we'll get onto that.

The Cricket Social is starting right now!

We're joined by English cricket royalty today in the form of England's most successful bowler Jimmy Anderson and Ashes-winning captain Mike Brearley. Charles Dagnall, Ebony Rainford Brent, Andy Zaltzman and Simon Hughes aren't too bad either!

  14. Eng 216-4published at 41 overs

    Morgan 91 Buttler 7

Eoin Morgan moves smoothly into the 90s, but there are no big hits from him or Jos Buttler as Lakshan Sandakan concedes five.

Though the sun is still shining brightly, the army of ground staff has just gone to have a look at the covers. This may be entirely routine, but I think we can be forgiven for being a bit sensitive about the weather... We'll keep you posted.

  16. Eng 209-4published at 40 overs

    Morgan 87 Buttler 4

Lasith Malinga looks a little thicker around the middle than back in the day, but he's 35 and generally that's what happens, I can assure you. He made his ODI debut in Dambulla in July 2004, and a tidy over concedes just three runs.

  17. Eng 206-4published at 39 overs

    Morgan 85 Buttler 3

I'm calling it - 300 and plenty is very much on now, whereas earlier it looked in the balance. Eoin Morgan hits Akila Dananjaya over a static Lasith Malinga at mid on for four, then slog-sweeps another from outside off stump.

  18. Eng 196-4published at 38 overs

    Morgan 76 Buttler 2

Jos Buttler's in and off the mark, but Nuwan Pradeep's extra pace gives the keeper and the captain a bit more to think about.

And we haven't mentioned the weather for a bit have we? It's still sunny, thankfully.

Stokes c Dhananjaya de Silva b Akila Dananjaya 15 (Eng 190-4)

Yet another leading edge dismissal! Ben Stokes mistimes a shot to leg and yet again the ball goes up and then down into the grateful hands of a Sri Lankan in the covers. Is the ball sticking in the pitch a bit, and what might this mean for the game as it wears on?
