    James Anderson
England fast bowler on The Cricket Social

I thought Joe Root might have struggled with being the younger lad in the team and telling the older lads in the team what to do, but he did an excellent job this summer and is getting better game by game.

    Mike Brearley
Former England captain on The Cricket Social

Ian Botham very unfortunate as a captain. He was young and hardly had a chance to captain anyone else which is another difference nowadays. I captained Middlesex for six years before captaining England. I got an apprenticeship away from the cameras.

Ian had a lot of good qualities for a captain. He was enthusiastic, was a team man, was generous, was a fine cricketer and had attacking ideas.

I think his biggest difficulty was he couldn't captain himself. I think sometimes he needed someone to reign himself in a bit.

    Perera 6 Dhananjaya 5

New batter Dhananjaya de Silva starts well, punching Woakes back past him for four.

Liam Dawson replaces Olly Stone, but it's very overcast now. Time to get a wriggle on and get to 20 overs.

Are you listening to The Cricket Social? In an ever-so-tenuous sort of way, you are socialising with cricketing royalty: James Anderson. And we can take it up a notch if you so wish. We're inviting readers and listeners to ask that one question of Jimmy they've always wanted to ask.

You've got one question. And one question only. Don't waste it like a Shane Watson review...

Sri Lanka would need to be 133 after 20 overs if they are still four wickets down to win on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern.

It has filled in. It feels like rain could be on the way but we might well get enough cricket in today.

    Shanaka c Buttler b Woakes 8 (SL 31-4)

Another beauty from Chris Woakes gets Dasun Shanaka fending outside off stump and giving Jos Buttler an easy catch.

Sri Lanka are officially in all sorts of trouble.

Olly Stone is not just making the Sri Lankan batsmen stand up and take notice - in the press box there are oohs and ahhs after almost every delivery. Thrilling stuff.

  8. SL 30-3published at 8 Overs

    Perera 3 Shanaka 8

Another rapid over from Olly Stone, but at the end of it Eoin Morgan can be heard saying "Cheers Stoney", so we'll be seeing someone else from the other end in a short while. It's hot and humid and hard for quicks, and Morgan may want to get a spinner on in order to get to 20 overs asap.

Chris Woakes keeps it tight again, and it's still Warwickshire at both ends with Olly Stone steaming in.

    Perera 3 Shanaka 5

Chris Woakes has become England's Mr Reliable - a sort of cricketing James Milner, if you will.

Anyway, Olly Stone is still rattling it through at 90mph, but worryingly the clouds are gathering and the lights are on. If it does rain before 20 overs, we will resume tomorrow. If it rains after 20 overs, the game will be decided on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method.

    Chandimal b Woakes 6 (SL 20-3)

Now it's Chris Woakes' turn to surprise with some extra lift, Dinesh Chandimal bottom edges the ball and it cannons into the top of the stumps.

And off the next ball Dasun Shanaka inside edges it over the top of leg stump.

    It's all happening.

The wicket ball was cross-seamer as well. In those conditions a cross-seam delivery can come off at a different pace. The shiny side skids on a bit quicker but if it hits the seam it can stick in the wicket and be a bit slower.

    Dickwella c Buttler b Stone 9 (SL 16-2)

Olly Stone doesn't take long to make his mark in international cricket!

He digs the ball in to get some unexpected lift, and Niroshan Dickwella can only fend the ball away off his glove. The ball loops up high behind him allowing Jos Buttler to come forward and collect an easy catch.
